Having recently received a few auction lots where the stamps were delivered in manila stock sheets, my first thought was "Great, these stock sheets will come in useful." But, the former museum curator in me, and the discoloration of some of them screamed "Caution!"
So, I bought a paper pH testing pen on for $8.32US on Amazon. Sure enough, none of the received stock sheets were acid free, so as soon as stamps are sorted and sheets empty, off to the recycle bin they go.
I suppose many of you already know this already, and so I now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming. Dan

gatodiablo - have you tried testing any used stamps with the pen? Or perhaps any covers from the 1940s - 1950s?

Can you show me this pen? Last time i saw something to measure the pH of old paper it was a regular pH-meter like the ones you can find in any chemical laboratory, and the "pen" was a pH-probe, which is similar to a pen, but quite delicate to use and also to maintain... Should i find something easier i could be interested... Not for stamps, but for my letters...

ameis33 Here is the Amazon link to the pen: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KNJCSS/JeffS I have not used it on stamps or covers. The problem with the pen is that on acid-free material, it leaves a purple streak. (On acidic papers, it leaves a yellow trail). Hence, I wouldn't use it on original, collectible materials. There is probably not much you can do if your stamps, covers, or other ephemera are not acid-free. But you can at least verify if your manila pages, album pages, and other storage boxes are acid-free.

My point is there is no shortage of junk stamps and covers to experiment on.

I just ordered one, I never thought about testing those manila pages. Thanks for the advise.
