What a troubled part of the world, artificially created by the Allies out of the dismembered Ottoman Empire in 1920 by drawing lines on a map. Britain was Mandated by the league of nations control of Palestine, Transjordan and Iraq, and France was Mandated to look after the territories that became Syria and Lebanon. Creating countries by the stroke of a pen was never a great idea.! In 1939 the area round Alexandretta in the north west corner of Syria, adjacent to Turkey declared itself the Republic of Hatay. Rejecting the French Mandate within a few months it agreed to join itself back to Turkey . Turkish stamps overprinted for this part of Syria which was a very short lived Republic. (Syria still lays claim to this province.)
