Well folks , 1st Oct it is, raining dull and grey!
so to brighten my life it looks like I’ll be spending a lot of the next couple of days at Stampex exhibition.........on the internet of course!
it has just officially opened with a timed programme of talks and presentations some of which I’ll join. There are displays and dealers booths to visit over the next three days . Some “bargain” offers and even the chance to spend money .....real money not virtual cash .
could be entertaining and pass the time on a miserable dull day .

I have already had a look and will spend more time there later today and next days. I hope to be able to attend to one or more of the presentations/talks.
And will look for some bargains, but they must bee good regarding to postage to Norway.
And the exhibition part I also will look into. On real live exhibition's I never read anything, but here at home there is time to study and read and even download the exhibition/images that interests you.
Maybe I will chat with someone on the boot's to ...

"Changing Times of Philately Online" Presented by CatawikiI just attended my first Stampex presentation. From a technical point of view, everything went well. As I am not the most tech-savvy person in the world, it took me a bit to figure out how to get in there. The presentation schedule is in one part of the website, whereas the Auditorium, where you can access the presentations, is in another. And then you need to wait until a "Join" button appears, which means that you can access the presentation. Got there in the end! The presentation was fine, but as perhaps should be expected for this particular topic and presenter, very much a sales pitch for Catawiki's website and services. Setting aside the sales pitch aspects of it, they did give some good advice about buying stamps online. They said the obvious things, such as: - Reputable sellers should always offer high-resolution images of the fronts and backs of all stamps
- Sellers should also offer certificates or guarantees for high-value items
- Buyers should be suspicious of high CV items offered at auctions with no reserve
- Buyers should learn how to look for clues in scans that indicate tears, thins, repairs, foxing, etc.
Overall, very sound advice of course, but nothing I hadn't already figured out for myself. For those just starting out in buying stamps online, it would certainly be useful. I am not so familiar with Catawiki, but they apparently sell lots of collectable items online, not just stamps. Some of their "stamp experts" gave specific examples of online stamp offerings that included forgeries that were not identified as such by the seller, stamps that had been re-gummed to hide evidence of foxing, as well as how to spot signs of repairs or damage in a scanned image. Good, cautionary tales, for sure. By managing my expectations, I enjoyed the presentation and I did learn at least one new thing, as I had never heard about re-gumming as a way to disguise foxing. Back to work for me now; I will try to check in on the program again later today. Stay stampy, all!

Spent some time this morning getting a feel for Stampex International, the Virtual Exhibition for 2020; I liked what I saw and look forward to spending some more time having a browse. Much of my time this morning was spent looking at the exhibits, have to agree with tobben63 , no tired feet and plenty of elbow room to to enjoy the pages! I was especially taken by the thematic exhibit entitled, " The Emerald Collection '1843 to 1870 Classics of the World". Here the quality of stamps is top drawer and all of them are green; what a great idea :-) Perhaps a single-page exhibit an a single colour is in order and with green already taken, which one? For now though and with 210 pages to view, this exhibit is going to take some time. So far though, plenty of emerald gems were spotted including Canada's 1857 7½d Green and only one of three known mint Pairs with full original gum! Large multiples are also well represented including Greece's 1861 Paris Printing 5lp Green, Portugal's 853 Dona Maria II First Issue 50r and New Zealand's 1862 'Chalon' 1s Green.
Let's see what else there is before moving to the Finnish, Russian or Tasmanian exhibits/pages. There is certainly no shortage of choice or eye-candy with these...
Happy collecting!

I think they have done a very good job, though I along with lots of people had difficulty finding the exhibits.
If you go to the the Stanley Gibbons booth you can download the July, August and September editions of the Stanley Gibbons Monthly magazine.

I was looking at the site and the guide is quite cluttered with the distracting background. I scanned the chats and did not see much of interest. I will try to look at some of the exhibits. It comes across as a dealer centric event.

Thanks michael , there is some good reading material there and the price is certainly right ;-)
One article of interest for any Polar Enthusiast is from the August issue entitled, "CANADA’S FARTHEST NORTH: PHILATELY OF THE QUEEN ELIZABETH ISLANDS" with sections on the Post offices and Camps of the Queen Elizabeth Islands including Royal Canadian Mounted Police posts, Weather stations (heads-up brightonpete ) and others made for some good reading along with the various cover illustrations and their cancellations.
As mentioned at the end of the piece, additional articles on the topic can also be found in Polar Post, by the Polar Postal History Society of Great Britain, and in Ice Cap News, by the American Society of Polar Philatelists. Good hunting, but watch out for the polar bears...
Happy collecting!

Thanks for this great tip, Vince. I had a browse through those green classics myself, because judging from the year range, I had a feeling that I would find the Cape of Good Hope green 1-shilling triangles, and I wasn't disappointed. They have some fabulous stamps and postal history there. Certainly way beyond the budget of any but the extremely wealthy for acquisition. So, I set my sights a bit more modestly! I really like your idea about a one-page colour-theme exhibit. The choice of green and using the emerald moniker was inspired. So, how about red, which could be called ruby if you like, or even blue with sapphire? Or you could get more creative and think of something else that exemplifies your colour of choice, rather than a gemstone, perhaps....

I too logged in and out of the exhibition between my college lectures. I must say it was really a nice experience considering it was all online !
I did not manage to attend any presentations but will try and do it tomorrow since I'm a little more free.
I could not find any exhibits at first but just checked and I think I've found them , I just need to look through today to see anything interesting.
BTW this is my first international stamp show I've attended.

Whilst it is closed now, the talks are all available to view. The one on the Expert Committee from the Royal Philatelic Society London is well worth viewing if you are interested in forgeries.

Indeed, the three-day extravaganza that was Stampex International is over, but as michael rightly points there is still plenty of content available post event. The virtual shows are, I think part of our collecting future and whilst nothing can replacing the pressing of flesh, I like the ability to "attend" shows, sit in on presentations and meet other collectors that I would not have had the chance to do otherwise. As the organizers continue to work out what is ideal, perhaps it will ultimately be a mix of the two, physical and virtual both.
Reflecting on the current show, I did spend some time checking out Stampex International including the dealers booth, the exhibits and even made a few contacts with regards my Polar interests. Overall, I think it was worth my time spent and if I was to win the Penny Black to which I entered, it would be the icing on the cake ;-)
The one gem of the show for me were the exhibits and the World-Class dispalys that they were including David Feldman's thematic exhibit, "The Emerald Collection '1843 to 1870 Classics of the World". A top-drawer collection requiring deep pockets and patience to build. This collection along with several others, like some of the talks from the Royal Philatelic Society of London, will continue to be available for our viewing pleasure here.
The collections showcased are truly stratospheric in terms of the material and certainly echo the sentiment as written in this Australian Post article that " philately, is the hobby of kings (and a pop star or two)" I am a firm believer in the scalability of our hobby and we Kings (and Queens) have our own realms; so here is a bit of my own Emerald collection with Canada's Cameo Issues,
Canada's Queen Elizabeth II – Cameo (1963) Miniature Sheet of 25 x 2¢
Happy collecting!

I've been to most Stampex shows over the last 10 years and always enjoy the exhibits, especially those containing stamps I'm interested in. However, there is always too much to take in and I'm always wanting to refer back to the exhibit in the future. As such I have attempted to take photos but invariably they come out blurred or are of poor quality.
Yes, it is nice to see real stamps/covers but I actually like the digital displays as per Virtual Stampex. I can read at my leisure and have saved the images of the 2 displays that I'm interested in, Liannos Local Post and The Pence Issues of Newfoundland, for future reference.
