UK stamp price goes up to 85 pence in January 2021. How does that compare to other countries?

What I collect: chess, patent thematics

Hi, my name is Charles Oppenheim. I am a thematic/topical collector - my themes are chess, and patents. I started collecting as a schoolboy (and still have that collection), dropped philately for many years, but resumed collecting in 1980. I am a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society, London and of the American Topical Association. Professionally, I am an intellectual property consultant, and advise on copyright law as it applies to philately. I don't believe there is any basis for catalogue producers, such as Scott or Stanley Gibbons, to claim they own rights in their numbering systems. I have given talks on copyright and philately to international philatelic events as well as to local clubs.

to TSF! Your expertise on patents related to philately sounds very interesting. And your thematic collections are certainly triggering my curiosity. Do not hesitate to start some threads about them and show us some examples!

Welcome Charles ( charleso ) to TSF. Hope you will find lots to interest you. Your Copyright interests would make a good topic for one of our 'Zoom' meetings which have become quite popular here. Looking forward to your input. Happy Collecting Londonbus1 (British ex-pat)

Welcome to TSF, Charles ( charleso)! I love your thinking that catalogue-makers should not be able to claim rights to their numbering systems. I hope that you will eventually be successful in de-bunking that. I have never heard of patents as a topical collecting theme, but why not? As it happens, I am a co-inventor of a US patent myself, but no one will ever be issuing a stamp to commemorate that, I'm afraid. Enjoy your time with us! Kind Regards, From a US expatriate living in the UK, Chris ( Beryllium Guy)

Well Charles ( charleso), it is great to have another thematic/topical collector among us :-) I look forward seeing some of your material, hearing a tale or two and perhaps even learning something new.
So please, pull up a chair, there is plenty of room...
Happy collecting!

Hi Charles. Welcome to the forum. It's a great place here. Patents on stamps is an interesting topic. My wife is a patent examiner at the Ministry of Justice here in Israel. Although she doesn't collect stamps, I'm sure she'll find interest in your posts. She also has two co-workers that collect stamps, I am sure they will also be interested to hear about your collection. Anyhow, have fun and enjoy your time here.
Kostia.
