'Postage Stamp Paper Quality: Special Construction of Lacquered Aluminium 60 gauge Foil laminated to 120 gm2 GIP Base Paper. Coated with special recipe particle adhesive Flat-Sam' Now, does that last sentence refer to the underside of the stamp? I can't be 100% sure I have managed to acquire this Samuel Jones booklet about Flat-Sam. It is clear that Flat-Sam is paper that is effectively matt gummed on one side and can be applied on the printed side of the paper, see the window sticker page. On the basis of this alone, I am now sure that, where Samuel Jones were involved in these embossed foil stamps, the backing paper is adhesive and just requires moistening. I have acquired some examples of these embossed foil stamps and will experiment with them.

Gold Foil Stamps - Bhutan and Tonga I've now completed my experimentation with examples of these stamps. I purchased a few cheap examples from Tonga and some early Bhutan. The stamps from Tonga are known to have been produced on Samuel Jones paper and from my posts above, the paper is identified as Flat-Sam which is described in the booklet above as having "high initial-tack adhesive coating. It's a more efficient particle coated gummed paper." Sure enough, using a tissue to moisten the back of the stamp, it adhered to an envelope perfectly well. For Bhutan, I used one of the gold foil stamps prepared for use in 1966 but not issued until 1968 when they were overprinted for Human Rights Year. Again, I moistened the paper with a tissue and, again, it stuck to an envelope perfectly well. Whoever printed these stamps quite likely also used Samuel Jones Flat-Sam paper.

Three more Samuel Jones & Co Poster Stamps advertising their products; Lightning Sealers for sealing packages, Gummed Paper and Large Gummed Labels. All recognisable as Samuel Jones either because of the Camberwell Beauty butterfly emblem or. in the case of the third stamp, a Samuel Jones & Co. Ltd notation in the margin

daniel , that is a fantastic acquisition! Thanks for showing the covers as well as 3 of the pages! Do you have any idea of the approximate year this was produced? I'm asking because the font on those pages seems more contemporary than I might have imagined, compared to the covers and the samples themselves. Perhaps Samuel Jones were ahead of their time. Also, please, please, as time permits, show more of those pages. I have a soft spot in my heart for this kind of material.

Also, please, please, as time permits, show more of those pages. I have a soft spot in my heart for this kind of material. Dave, Samuel Jones appeared not to date their catalogues. However, there is a a tip in plate stating that 'This Book is Presented to G.V.R. Watson With the Compliments of Samuel Jones & Co. Ltd.' It is numbered 4420 and dated 30.3.1955. How long it took to distribute that many catalogues is unknown but likely early 1950s or even late 1940s. More pages to follow. Daniel

By 1966 Samuel Jones had been taken over by Wiggins Teape who were also paper makers. Wiggins Teape also owned Shoalhaven Paper Mills, Bomaderry, New South Wales, Australia which allowed them to overcome import restrictions. Samuel Jones also operated in Australia at Keon Park, Victoria and the two companies worked together producing paper for Australian postage stamps. Phosphorescence had been introduced into stamp paper and Samuel Jones trialled new techniques for the coating. So, Samuel Jones would coat and gum Wiggins Teape paper beginning with Australia's 1971 Christmas stamps shown her with the printing done by the Note Printing Branch, Reserve Bank of Australia, Melbourne. The Three Wise Men issued 13th October 1971. Optimum collection format = Block showing Green Cross $300

rod222 , I have that sample book. Where did you find those images? Thanks, Daniel daniel Inspired by you, if I recall, many of my Cinderellas were printed by Samuel Jones I went searching for further information on Samuel Jones. On the 28th July 2021, I found the Album on ebay..... and the $500 was beyond my wallet. I saved the images (Tasmanian Vendor) Given their success, I wonder why they never entertained making stamp hinges !
