Hello, new collector here. I am a retired Engineer (Public Safety Communications, 911 systems etc). Always had an interest in Stamp Collecting, dabbled a bit when I was a young man . . . fast forward. I have an Aunt who is 87 yrs young (I can barely keep up with her). She has a huge 65 year collection (World . . it fills several rooms) which I will inherit some day She recently decided to gift me a huge collection of US Revenues she had acquired. Five or six large boxes of Revenues she had acquired over the years through auctions etc . . . many are unsorted, none are in albums, about half are in Stock books and many are in glassine envelopes by type, color or Scott illustration number . . a few are actually catalogued (Maybe 20%). I purchased a 2010 Scott Specialized Catalogue on eBay for few dollars and have been working my way though them and learning a lot along the way . . . included with the collection are several books on Revenue Stamps: - "An Introduction to Revenue Stamps" by Castenholz - "The Morton Morton Dean Joyce Collection of US Revenue Stamps" by Kelleher Co., Inc, 589th sale, June 4-5, 1991 ( has been a great reference ) - "The Revenue Stamps of the United States" by Christopher West I am about 2/3rds through what I have but the first 60 - 70% has been basically a huge learning curve. I will definitely be going back to the beginning and through to the end at least one more time. Learning about Perfs, Watermarks, Grading, Colors (oh my) etc. etc. I have so far found some real gems in this collection $$ . . . and about 237 quadrillion dupes of low value documentary stamps . . anyone need some Battle Ship Documentaries?? I recently ordered the full Revenue set of albums from Palo Albums $$ very nice. I decided to go with Palo after seeing my Aunts Newfoundland (Pre Dominion of Canada) collection in the Palo Album. However . . . I will be beginning my actual mounting in the printable albums for revenues found online. I will be saving the best examples in this collection for the Palo albums. Well, that is about it for my intro. Look forward to continual learning here from the experts. Regards, Douglas Logan

Welcome to TSG johngaltI hope your time spent here is enjoyable and educational (ask away, there are many knowledgeable folks her). I myself have a large amount of US stamps which I haven't even begun to go through (and I wonder if I will, and it just may be back of the book issues) as my interests seemed to have taken on a life of their own and I mainly focus on western Europe Cheers Stan Northern California

Hi, Douglas ( johngalt) and welcome to TSF! Since no one else has commented about your site name, I'll bite: Ayn Rand fan, are you? Don't know if that figures into your collecting at all, but I have enjoyed The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged ever since I first read them. They are iconic pieces of American literature, at least to my thinking. Anyway, I hope that you will enjoy your time with us, and I look forward to seeing some posts of those U.S. revenue stamps. I have a few squirreled away somewhere, but they have amounted to an accumulation only, as I never did anything with them. See you around the boards, -Chris ( Beryllium Guy)

Yes Chris, a big Ayn Rand fan . . actually "Who is John Galt?" would have been my forum name if it was possible . . . and my secondary Philatelic interest is Trains Have read "Atlas Shrugged numerous times . . have yet to read "The Fountainhead" . . . . soon . . . and "The Dam Busters" is one of my favorite movies . . . and the Lancaster is one of my favorite airplanes' . . . . I see that you are from the UK

Thanks for your further comments, Douglas ( johngalt ). Glad to know that you are also an Ayn Rand fan. Yes, I am indeed living in the UK at the moment, but I am a US expatriate. I lost my long-time job in the US early in 2017, and found a new job overseas and moved to France in Mar-2018. Then I got offered a job in the UK, so moved to Oxford in Oct-2019. It has been years since I last read something by Ayn Rand, so I should probably think about re-visiting one of those. I would also say that I really like the movie version of The Fountainhead starring Gary Cooper, Raymond Massey, and Patricia Neal from 1949. It's not as good as the book, but still a good watch, and I am a sucker for the old black-and-white films from that era. Welcome, again!

Welcome johngalt. My ancestors moved from the town of Potter, NY to Shelby, MI in the late 1800s. Many of my ancestors, Sacketts, Gages and Saunders, lived in the towns of Rushville, Potter, Penn Yan...basically the Yates County area. While I am not sure where you are located in central NY, perhaps you are near there.

Welcome to TSF! It's great to hear that you will be an inheritor of an aunt's philatelic estate ... more of us wish to be in either position (either having an interested family member to gift or to receive such a gift).

Welcome Douglas ( johngalt) - where in CNY are you? I am in Northern New York, due north of Syracuse, gazing out longingly at Canada just across the invisible border that is the St. Lawrence Seaway.
