Today is Labor Day in the United States. To commemorate Labor Day, on September 3, 1956, the U.S. issued a 3c deep blue, perf. 10.5x11 stamp (Scott 1082) designed by Victor S. McCloskey, Jr. The stamp features a mosaic in the AFL-CIO Headquarters building in Washington, DC.

That is an error on a stamp.
The quote in the shield is in essence, an error. Thomas Carlyle was a Scot, and most certainly would have wrote "Labour is life"
Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 – 5 February 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. He called economics "the dismal science", wrote articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, and became a controversial social commentator.

...The quote in the shield is in essence, an error. Thomas Carlyle was a Scot, and most certainly would have wrote "Labour is life"... You are correct, Carlyle did write "Labour" vice "Labor" in Chapter XI of his work Past and Present, first published in 1843. However, the 17 by 51 foot freestanding mosaic mural in the south lobby of the AFL-CIO Headquarters was designed by American muralist Lumen Martin Winter and titled "Labor is Life-Carlyle," so technically, the text in the shield on the stamp conveys Winter's title of the mosaic and not Carlyle's quote.

If you ever cease stamp collecting Steve, Law would seem an adequate pursuit.

Labor Day weekend is almost over here on the East Coast, but before the clock strikes, here are a couple of FDCs on related themes. (Scott 988, from 1950, honors the great labor activist Samuel Gompers; Sc 1831, from 30 years later, celebrates America's organized labor movement as a whole.) Happy Labor Day, everyone!
