My name is Adam Garfinkle, and I live in Wheaton, Maryland, USA. I have been collecting stamps since I was about 9 or 10. I collect the world, or used to, up to 1976 because the Scott Intl pages I had stopped then. I focus on the US, Europe and colonies (not including Central and Eastern Europe), and the Middle East/Muslim world (most of it, not all of it). I also have Scott or Palo and a few White Ace specialty albums for three Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela), and for four Asian countries (Japan, Singapore, Korea, and Thailand), and for Ethiopia.
On June 1 I will turn 70, assuming I live that long, and turn on Social Security benefits. That is the planned time for me to stop accumulating and start divesting. We'll see if I have the emotional stamina to actually do that. I plan to do that because neither my spouse, three children or so far five grandchildren could give a damn about stamps, and all are either a little or a lot resistant to learning.
I have not for many years been involved in any stamp clubs--too busy with work. I trade with one person only these days who lives fairly near me, just over the river in northern Virginia, where I grew up. Until recently I have bought from only one auction--just too busy for more than that. Before 2019-20, when my wife and I spent the year overseas and my collecting had to lapse, I bought from only one dealer and two small-time private collectors. I no longer do that. So my web of connections is very small compared to many collectors.
One motive for joining this forum, to be honest, is to be able to sell material. But I can't imagine yet making 50 posts to qualify. Whatever would I say, about what? So we'll see how it goes. I'm still pretty busy; not exactly retired and stamps are not my only hobby. There are also musical instruments and old Cadillacs in the world that need attention.....

Welcome Adam to TSF! You'll be surprised at how quickly 50 post can occur by simply commenting on threads where you either have some knowledge, or have a question! And we always enjoy seeing scans of others stamps.
And you are not alone with no one else in your family showing an interest in stamps.
Cheers

Welcome adamgarfinkle ! I do not feel that you will be impressed with the "Selling aspect" of this Forum. Besides welcoming new members, it is a great place to share your stamps and ideas. To accumulate 50 posts (easy) you need to participate in your favorite threads/Countries etc. Just saying welcome to people is not the "way" to get to "50" credible posts. I am sure you have a lot to share, scan etc. and look forward to your Posts !! Renรฉ Canada

Welcome! I understand what you mean by the emotional problem of having to eventually part with a collection. Not one person in my family cares to inherit my stamp (or another other) collection. Hopefully you can at least find like-minded people here for a friendly chat.

to TSF! You'll see that the 50 post mark can easily be reached if you participate in the discussions and post some of your stamps to illustrate thematic collecting threads (or even better, start your own on a new topic) and populate some of the lesser inhabited country threads with some nice pieces from your collection that are representative of their philatelic history. Don't be shy!

Welcome from the UK Adam ( adamgarfinkle ) - I'm sure there would also be some (like me) who'd love to hear more about your love of musical instruments and old Cadillacs over at our lounge/off-topic thread as well!

Hello Adam--I used to live in Falls Church and Annandale, so you are a Beltway insider lol
I am 57, I know I will be still enjoying my collection then, so maybe the forum can inspire your interests.

Welcome, Adam, to TSF. I collect the world (you and I have a shared interest in Ethiopia and Muslim countries), especially British Commonwealth and British Africa. I'm about fifteen years your junior, but the family lack of interest is a commonality. As my home office space becomes increasingly more philatelically dedicated, my wife has been very patient. Your post reminds me that one day I will need to make a disinvestment plan as well, but I'm not quite ready to do that yet!
