A pen cancel with faint CDs. Facit lists several pen cancels that are identified with particular cities.

Some of these Finland serpentine perfs have teeth that are folded over. I’ve tried to unfold them, but they are so fragile that they break off too easily. So now I leave them as is. First do no harm, eh?

Terri ( philatelia ), I recently told you about some old Finland covers (including one postal card) that I found while in California. Here is a photo: Top Left: Finland, Sc176D, 5m sapphire (dark blue) definitive stamp postmarked in blue ink on 03-Dec-1945 Top Right: Finland, Sc135, 1½m blue green and red violet definitive stamp postmarked on 05-Oct-1926 Bottom Left: Finland, Sc41, 20p orange definitive stamp postmarked on 22-Apr-1900 Bottom Right: Finland postal card 9m surcharged on 7m dark red (will gladly add a catalogue number if someone can supply one) So, Terri, these four items were mailed out today and are now on their way to you. I hope they will arrive safely.

What I collect: Samoa, Tobacco theme, Mail in Wartime, anything odd and unusual!

Items 2 and 3 above are railway sorting carriage cancels for Mail handled on a postal wagon on a train. I think the straightline mark on cover 2 is the name of little railway halt where the item was posted.
COVER 1 is interesting with the Red Cross logo . General Mannerheim was the Finnish leader in the 1940s wars with Russia. As I read the text this seems to be on behalf of a Mannerheims association for prisoners of war relief.

Thank you very much for your insights on these covers, Alex ( vikingeck).... great stuff! I had no idea about these, and now they will be for Terri ( philatelia) to study. I am glad to know that there may be some interesting aspects to these.

A few years ago I started picking these up now and then; fascinating but tricky; Finnish figure cancels. This on a high denomination F24, 1 mark. The stamp was issued 1885, in use until 1889. That’s most of what I'm certain of. Figuring the town/village is the tough part. From the source I’m using, Laitinen, this is figure cancel no. 182A from Nystad/Uusiaupunki.
What I know: these were used mostly by small post offices, from 1875 to 1890, with declining frequency through the early 1900s, as date cancellers reached smaller post offices. All look like cork or soft wood carvings. Laitinen says the idea seems imported, probably from figure cancels in the US. All are simple, usually cross-work like this one. Nothing as glorious as a running chicken. But a hell of a lot cheaper.
I wish I knew more about the rest of the letter. Was there a date cancel, and the figure just a stamp killer? Or was this it, like Laitinen thought?
