My father introduced me to stamps in the mid/late 70s encouraging me to help with his collection of GB stamps, I attended many stamp fairs with him over the years and often went to the Post Office to get Presentation Packs and new editions of stamps. My father suggested I should start a collection of my own, after much thought I chose the Isle Man Stamps as they started in 1973. The carrot-stick approach worked as this encouraged me to try and buy as many as I could! Over the years we built up the collection buying new SG sleeves each year (from a stamp shop in Stockport) until around 1984/5 when my interest started to move into other areas. By this time (in my opinion) we had built up a nice collection of mint stamps, presentation packs and GB postcards (PHQ cards I think they are now called). From the mid 80s the albums were stored away and for the last 20 years they been in my possession where they have not been opened until recently for me to take these pictures, please see the link below. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ASZm9sM82n0UDUOgUS3wULOkpsIvM53W?usp=sharingThe link should present you with three folders with various pictures showing some of the stamps · Great Britain · Isle of Man and · Presentation Packs and Postcards Now in my mid-50s I am interested in your opinions hence joining this forum of stamp collectors, any comments much appreciated! to the forum, Ian! ( schoolboyhobby) Nice collection you have. I used to collect IOM as well and only have a couple items left from there in my collection - one of which is the mail boats souvenir sheet. It took me a while to get to the pictures, as no amount of clicking revealed anything. Oh, double click and there they are! Have fun here!

Hi Ian , Congratulations on rediscovering your stamp collection. Like many others there was a buzz about stamps in the 1960s -1980s period which is when you were active, Isle of Man had just become an independent stamp issuing authority and may folks were looking for a new country to start , just like you ,
You ask for comment. Now the big question, are you planning to build on your collections? and how to take them forward? or are you wondering about disposing of it? You have a nice base to work on and the 1980s 1990s issues will be available at a reasonable discount off catalogue For Both countries you have a lot of catch up to bring them up to date and be warned the purchase price for year collections of the past 20 years from the Millennium, as listed in a current journal " Philatelic Exporter ," is about £1000 for GB! and over £100 each of the last two years > My personal advice would be keep and build 1. to get page supplements to allow you to mount up your later issues which are languishing on stocksheet pages 2. Where you have duplicate sets from the 1980s, dispose of the spares by trade or use as postage (there really is no merit in keeping a second set They have current postage value only) 3. to work backwards in your GB into the areas you are missing, eg earlier QE II,Victoria to Geo VI (Unless these are available in your Dad's collection?) 4. Booklets, presentation packs and PHQ cards can be kept in the type of folder you are using . 5. have fun and enjoy re-discovering whet you already have
The slight downside to your collection as it stands, is the current market place. A lot of similar material collected in the 1970s and 1980s and frozen in time, has been coming up for sale. The buying market is stagnant or depressed for this particular period. So if you are planning on selling be aware that our generation of collectors in GB probably has similar material and there are more sellers than buyers so prices are low for 1960-1980 material.

Thanks all for the welcoming comments and sharing your knowledge, if only forums like this were around in the 70s!
I was on the fence whether to sell them or rebuild the collection, as my original intention was to pass them onto my kids though I doubt my now-adult kids have ever bought a stamp in their lives!
I will keep hold of the albums and in the future start chipping away at rebuilding the years of missing stamps Thanks Ian

Welcome to the group!
Another idea is to work backwards and try to find precursor material for your area of interest. Some modern material is rarely postally used which is a bit of drawback for those of us interested in usages. BUT the important thing is to collect whatever brings a smile to your face! That's the joy of collecting - YOU decide what is worth your time and money. The possibilities are endless!
