I have a few Spanish-rule "infante" mint definitives with a diagonal overprint reading Provisional in red, and with the date 1898 above and 1899 below. This overprint isn't listed by Scott, either in the classic or US specialized catalog, so I assume it's a fake item trying to trick collectors who have heard of the Spanish-American War..... Can anyone with specialized expertise confirm that these are fakes, please? And add, if known, what the source of the bogus items might be?
Thanks,
Adam

What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

Your overprint is briefly mentioned and illustrated in my Michel Caribbean edition following the Spanish colonial issues and preceding the section heading for the American occupation listings. They are not given either catalogue numbers or prices - it merely says "other overprints are not official".

These stamps, are listed on the specialised Edifil as released in 1898 with numbers 177/181
Scan from my 1996 copy. So, prices are in peseta (100 pta = 0.6 €)

That is very helpful, thank you. Now I know how many denominations there were. I still don't know from the two replies if they were meant to be and were used to carry the mail. I suspect not, so I don't know why there would be listings for used stamps in Edifil. Has anyone ever seen one used or, better, seen one on a piece or a whole envelope? I'd be surprised if the answer was yes.
