I was very surprised to read that the first ever chess themed stamp (shown here) was issued by non-else than my home country Bulgaria, in 1947.
Just a quick update - recently found out that Michel had released a specialized catalogue on chess. Bough it so that i can answer my initial inquiry. Indeed, the first listed chess stamp there is the one shown at the beginning of this thread.
Actually, the catalogue is so good that it even mentions the games most of the stamps show. If anyone interested I could try and share some of its pages.
Sadly, none of the nice Lao stamps salentin has posted here comes with such a detailed description, so my quest to decipher them is a game on.

Here is a FDB of a chess set, released by the Faroes back in 1983. They are pieces by Pòl, with a King and Queen shown. Engraved by the master: Czesław Słania. I'll cross-post when the day comes next week.

(I just checked pronunciation & I was getting it right!)

stanley64 thanks a lot for this one! For an instant I thought Stamp Collector took inspiration from our thread. Then I realized it was rather the TV show :)anyways, will purchase the issue and have a read through it. hrdoktorx this one is definitely among my favorite modern stamps, mainly because of the special printing technique involved. brightonpete now this is a BINGO - chess AND the Master! salentin thank you for keeping the thread alive and kicking!

On Oct.5th,1972 the German Bundespost issued for West-Germany and for West-Berlin sets of children´s toys chess-figures.Produced in the 19th century by the fayence-manufacture Glen of France. I could not find any deeper information than that. The lower values show a knight and a ruck of each colour. (red and blue, instead of white and black) My best guess is,that those figures were not produced for an "ordinary" clientele.

Hello stamp friends, I have enjoyed reading the posts in this thread, which I found this morning. Just by chance I was also updating my checklist of stamps concerning the topic of anti-corruption, a sub-topic of my legal collection, when I came across this stamp from Latvia. It is Scott 975, issued October 10, 2017. I was puzzled by the analogy of chess to anti-corruption. However, a quick search on Google took me to the excellent Latvia Post website, which provided additional information. The KNAB is the Corruption Prevention and Combatting Bureau of Latvia. The stamp was issued to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the creation of the Bureau in 2002. The following is from the website. The stamp features the KNAB’s motto "Honour Above Power," which signifies the high importance of honour in the fight against corruption. The notion of honour explains the attitude of a person towards himself or herself and the attitude of society towards the particular person, while honesty includes values such as trust, truthfulness and integrity. In turn, chess pieces on the stamp symbolically represent the process of anti-corruption fight. KNAB is a public administration institution under the supervision of the Cabinet of Ministers. Its functions include the prevention and combatting of corruption, as well as the control over the implementation of the rules of financing of political organisations and their associations.

Belgium has also produced a seet of stamps with "house games", and one stamp is on Chess. In the serie of Cambodia, looking at the stamps, I was surprised by the souvenir sheet with Amiens Cathedrale : all is about Paris '90 (there where no world championship this year in Paris, except if somebody has more information, only the year french championship of Ile de France. So Why Amiens and not Cathedrale Notre-Dame (before it burns :-(. And in the serie also the castles of Azay-Le-Rideau .. in Loire area.
Not any idea of the beginning af an answer
Philately giving more question than answer when you look further than the image :-)
And did you know that Karpov has one of the most valuable collection of Belgium stamps ? Corneille soeteman, one of the most known stamp dealer (specialized), has helped him to collect, hosted a part of his collection, be father in God of one of her girl ? He's located near the Bourse in Brussels, in de rue du midi which was (no more) THE street of Philately and numismatic shops.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

While going through the envelopes of the 'D" countries in the large collection I am working on I came across this souvenir sheet between pages of my Dominican Republic pages in my world wide album. This sheet was issued in 1967 to commemorate the 5th Central America Chess Championship. There was also a regular stamp and an airmail one issued at this time. This sheet's Scott number is C152a.

As a patzer I feel it should be my duty to contribute to this thread. Starting with the 2020 FDC Issued by Kyrgyz Express Post to commemorate the 2020 on-line Chess Olympiad They also issued a Maxi Card:
The on-line Olympiad ended with both India and Russia being declared joint winners after internet connectivity issues prevented some of the Indian players being able to compete.

I picked up some philatelic items in France from a stamp and chess enthusiast. I too love both hobbies. Very interesting pieces. I will post them another day . He has a website for those who are interested in Fischer Spassky 1972 match of the century and the philatelic history of that match. histoire-echecs-philatelie.com/le-match-du-siecle-1972/

Komi is a republic of Russia. Karjala is the Finnish and Karelia is the Russian for a region now split between the two. Either way, none issues their own stamps and so these are both bogus. They are, however, very attractive and fantastical designs. So, here they are:
