Alas, I have searched the Forum but could not find anything relevant or details of hardware supported for those of us that are running Linux as their operating system.
Does anyone have experience and or recommendation for a flat-bed scanner that has drivers for and support the Linux OS e.g. Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS?
Any input is appreciated...
Happy collecting! scanning?

I can vouch for VueScan! It's an excellent piece of software. I bought a license years ago and it is still good after all those years. He keeps adding scanners to the mix, so there's no issue with any new scanner.

Most modern scanners are now supported by Linux via SANE (a scanner interface library).
If you would like to use a scanner which is not supported by SANE, then VueScan would be your best bet as it supports a wider range of devices. I tried VueScan but as my current scanner is supported by SANE, for me, I didn't find that VueScan offered any advantage over the free "Simple Scan" that was installed with Linux Mint. VueScan does offer a lot more options so it may be worth installing the trial version to see if these would be of benefit to you. I currently have a Canon LIDE 220 scanner, I am happy with it except for one annoyance. When scanning it "sees" an imaginary black line running down the left edge of the page. As a result, even if I scan a single stamp the scanner will scan a full page. I am not sure if this is a Linux software driver problem or a hardware problem with my particular scanner.
So, although for the most part it performs well on Linux, I am loath to give it an unreserved recommendation not knowing whether my problem is an isolated case or not.

clivel : You can make a custom scan that uses smaller sizes, or alter any of the pre-set's that come with the Canon software. I made a custom size that just scans a small portion, so I end up with a much smaller scan. Still needs work, but at least it isn't the whole page!

Thanks for the tip/opinion - I do not like Vuescan - just my opinion from a basic 70 yr old guy/member René

Thanks to all that responded; it is much appreciated :-) I see that the application, 'Simple Scan' referred to by Clive ( clivel ) is also installed natively with the Ubuntu version of Linux as well and has received positive reviews; all good. With the software already in hand and Canon products appearing in several 'Best Scanner' product lists, a trip to the local Worten's is order to see them in-person is in order. With any luck, I will scanning with the best of them by week's end... Happy scanning!

Found the necessary Linux software (there is plenty out there and all free to download), along with the drivers to support a CanoScan LiDE300, but after experiencing hardware issues, poor after-sales support from the manufacturer, the device was returned and I am back to square one. I see one of the TSF members using a Epson WF-3720 Series device with clear, clean and reasonable results. Anyone else have positive recommendations or products to avoid for their own scanners or 3-in-1s experiences? If so, please do share...
Happy collecting (and scanning)!

I have the Epson v600 Photo and I'm quite happy with it. I have a near new LiDE300 back in the box- it really had problems with some colors....

Thanks for the input Stan ( stainlessb); much appreciated :-) From the images you have shared and the other examples shown here on TSF, it would appear that the Epson line is the next one to pursue...
Happy collecting!

stanley64 It comes with a white background- I purchased a "spare" and painted matte black. I tried ntaping a piece of black construction paper, but on larger scans the tape used was a problem. It slides in an out so easy to change!

Great stuff Stan ( stainlessb ); I appreciate the follow-up :-) For all the recommendations of an Epson product, they are well founded and the Epson 3100-series scans a treat,
Will continue to investigate the black-background when scanning, but for now it all works as advertised and over Wi-Fi at that...
Happy collecting scanning!
