What I collect: The World...just printing and mounting as I go...call me crazy!

I collect and stash these away when they arrive in my mailbox. Trust me when I say I have quite a stash. One just recently arrived and I thought it would be a good opportunity to show them off here on the forum. In the end the postmark is a form of precancel used by high volume mailers like businesses and non-profit organizations, after obtaining a permit from the US Postal Service. The USPS Domestic Mail Manual, 604 Postage Payment Methods and Refunds, states: 3.4.6 Design and Content of Mailer’s PostmarkThe mailer’s precancel postmark must contain specific elements:The mailing date (day, month, and year) if used on First-Class Mail; the month and year of mailing may be shown on USPS Marketing Mail. The words “Mailer’s Postmark” followed by the permit number and enough lines to deface (cancel) the postage.Either the city, state, and 5-digit ZIP Code of the Post Office where the precancel permit is held and the mailing is to be deposited, or the words “Mailed From ZIP Code” followed by the 5-digit ZIP Code of the mailing office. (If that Post Office is assigned more than one 5-digit ZIP Code, the precancel postmark must show the 5-digit ZIP Code assigned to the postmaster.)The design of the precancel must also meet specific design criteria: 3.4.9 Required FormatA mailer must use one of the Format A designs in Exhibit 3.4.9. Format B may be used only by a mailer previously authorized to do so and who has the necessary die. The only permissible alternative or modification to any format is the addition of a price marking permitted by 3.4.7. I thought the one I recently received was a little bit more interesting in that the permit number does not seem to be part of the rest of the postmark and seems to be pre-printed separately on the envelope. The stamp is the 2020 presort star design issued in February of last year and is Sc. no. 5433. The permit no. is 212, pre? printed separately on cover. So, this is a start. If you live in the US, you are likely to have one of these show up in your mailbox at one point or another. Post your covers with Mailer's Precanceled Postmarks here!

JeffS, I don't think it is. It looks as if the cancel was printed on the envelope and then the stamp placed on top of it.

In the end the postmark is a form of precancel used by high volume mailers like businesses and non-profit organizations, after obtaining a permit from the US Postal Service. Even small-volume private individuals could get Mailer's Postmark Permits - our no-longer-active member Zuzu had an MPP which she used for her mail art covers. Here's an example of something she sent to me, showing her use of the MPP. Ryan

I have 4 MPP permits (Mailer's Postmark Permit), and I am not a bulk mailer. Just a philatelist. Anybody can get such a free permit from USPS, including non-US citizens like my friend Derwin Mak (Canada). See my group about MPP: www.facebook.com/groups/427062007360280

Mailer's postmark permit no. 296 from zip code no. 40221 which is approximately the area of Louisville, KY. This came to my wife and contained advertising for home siding and windows. The stamp is one of the two 2016 Star Quilts stamp, Sc. no. 5099 circle quilting in corners.

I haven't received one of these in a while and I thought this was a particularly nice one. The only thing that could have made it better is if the 2020 issued Presort Star, Sc. no. 5433 also had a plate number at the bottom but I will take it anyway. Permit no. 31097 from Minneapolis, MN, Zip Code 55401

Cool thread! Here's one that arrived in today's mail - Permit No. 1686, from zip code 08031. Nice stamp, too. I mentioned in another thread that I've been getting a lot of the Scabiosa design (Sc 5665) from the new Butterfly Garden Flowers non-profit coil, and only one lonely Cosmos (Sc 5664). Make that two!
(edited to add the full cover, with a very worthwhile appeal)

Get your own MPP permit, and postmark your mail. USPS Form 3615. Like I said, I have 4 permits.
Better than just collecting it from commercial bulk mailers.

But do the postal boys let you take home the items you postmark at their office?
Maybe you want complimentary, philatelic cancellations, not just postal ones.
I can create maxicards and covers at home, at will. No fussing from " the boys". Or girls.

Here's another MPP cover from the U.N. Refugee Agency that arrived in today's mail with a worthy appeal for people and families fleeing the war in Ukraine. I like the envelope's eye-catching colors, which complement the stamp (Sc 5664 again). Holding on to this while I send back the enclosed donation form.

Received today, this creative mailer produced to resemble a sheet from a NCR pad, complete with fabricated offsetting/smudging on the front, simulated ink-written quotation, and franked with one of the new "Barn" presorted standard mail stamps. Simulated yellow highlighting on their phone number too. Printed on card stock to withstand the rigors of flat mailing.

Another Flag on Barn pre-sort with MPP 31097, postmarked in Minneapolis. Sc. no. 5684 Flag on Red Barn Near Well. I should have posted this weeks ago because now I forget what was in the envelope.

Here's a nice one from my mail today: Permit No. 4045, mailed from ZIP code 23232 in Richmond, Virginia. That last part is a bit of a puzzle, since the return address is from closer to home: The New York Public Library's main branch in midtown Manhattan. The slogan - "More Books Needed" - is one that we live by in my house.

A mailers permit cancel from 1963, strictly philatelic in origin, with a National Association of Precancel Collectors show cancel on Sc. UY16, a paid reply postal card. The cancel dial with the show information puzzles me a little. I don't know if it is part of mailers permit #46 or applied separately. Similar cards from the Kansas Precancel Society shows also use a mailers permit, but their cancel dials are printed with no show information or dates.
I bought this card for the fish part of the cancel.

Here's another example I was happy to come across in the mail: Permit 1105, mailed from ZIP code 66609 (Topeka, Kansas). I like how the purple-blue color of the cover border complements the 5c Grapes stamp.

In today's mail
Commercial mail with a presorted mail "barn" coil, unusual to find on a small envelope.

This cancel looks similar to Jeff's, but with differences. I opened this cover, but don't remember what was being sold. Looks like a lot of variety in these cancesl. Might be a rich collecting field at low cost. Don StampHinger

Saratoga Mailer's Postmark for Apr 24 1982 on the Library of Congress issue of 3 days earlier. I have no idea what Millwood Mafia Mail is but it sounds like an oranisation that you wouldn't want to cross.

I know nothing about "Millwood Mafia Mail" but saying the letters EDBTZ sounds like an Arabic phrase.
