I am based in England. As a teenager (in the 1960s) I collected UK First Day covers but had a special interest in the stamps of the various states of Malaya (e.g. tiger stamps). At some point I will try to sell my whole collection but right now I would like to know about this 1 sen post card ( I believe it is a so-called double-trip or return card) whose date is impossible to read but perhaps someone can tell me about how one might date it by the design )is it between 1885 and 1895?). For some reason I am trying to understand this post card ended up inside a book in Ireland. Thank you! hew

hew , Welcome to the stamp board! We are pushing at the boundaries of my knowledge, but I'll tell you what I can discern from your scan, and then will ask for a couple of other scans. You are correct -- it is a paid reply postal card. Off the top of my head, I *think* this is the reply portion, but I'd need to check on that to verify. (I have't really worked with these in probably 20+ years, and my language skills have faded.) We can tell that it is a paid reply card from the 3-character column of printing at the far left of the card. Those characters also tell whether it is the originating card or the reply card. That column of writing doesn't exist on 'regular' (non-reply) cards. The earliest this card might be is 1885, when the 1-sen design type was issued. There was a slight design change in 1886, and I can't quite tell which one it is. This type of card was superceded in 1899 with a different design, and that card was then superceded by yet another type when the rate increased to 1½ sen sometime later in 1899. So I think the year could be bracketed between 1885 and 1899. There is someone I know who may well be able to provide more information. Anticipating the questions he might ask, is there any way you could scan an image of the back of the card? There may be date information there (in Japanese characters), or other information that could provide more context. Also, if you look closely, there is tiny writing in the border design of the card at the bottom. The original scan is just too blurry for me to discern the writing, but that can help determine which of 2 types of cards it is. Additionally, if you're able to scan in the postmark (preferably both instances, at the top and bottom of the card), that could be helpful, too. In the interim, I hope this is a bit helpful in answering your question. Again, welcome to the board!

hew , Please post your question in the postal card thread on the Japan board. The new member intro board is for that purpose and substantive matters are best addressed in the appropriate topical or geographic categories.

Hi hew,
Just returned to the Forum from a long hibernation and found your post;
Your postcard is a sender's part (e.g. not the reply part) of the 1 Sen + 1 Sen paid reply Koban postal card, issued on 1885 (Meiji 18), listed as PC13 in Japanese Stamp Specialized Catalogue. This is the earlier issue of the paid reply Koban postal card, and could be distinguished from the later issue of 1886 (PC15) by the difference in the inscription in the lower margin.
The card is dispatched from Bessho-mura, Daimon-dori, Otsu (now Daimon-dori, Otsu city, Shiga prefecture). The cancellation / date stamp is a double circular datestamp (type N3B3) of Otsu (大津), Meiji 18 (1885) April 1st, "He- (6 th)" delivery. The face value of the postcard is obliterated by Large Bota cancel of Otsu (impression is not so clear though).
The postcard is addressed to Bungobashicho, Fushimi (now Bungobashicho, Fushimi-ku, Kyoto city, Kyoto prefecture), and thus bears a double circular datestamp (type possibly KB2) of Fushimi post office, dated on the same day (April 1st).
Hope this shed some light to this postcard !

Philatarium...I don't think hew picture he posted is a scan..taken with a cell phone/camera. cleaned it up a bit.
Robert
Here is why i believe it was taken wth a camera roughly about 10-15 degree angle as shown by the border difference below. Robert
