I ran out of 28mm mounts (Ukraine issues a LOT of 28 mm stamps.) Drove to the local stamp store and the guy was out of all mounts smaller than 50mm and he can't get more from his distributor. Seems stamps and coins have kind of taken off with the pandemic.
So, I go to order them online. I go to Global Stamps, order two packs of 28 mm stamps and the shipping was going to be $4.99.
Global Stamps is in Olympia, Washington and I am in Bensalem, PA, which is a suburb of Philadelphia.
I'm impatient, so I see where else I can get mounts. Subway Stamp Shop is in Altoona, PA. There's about 3 hours from me, so I can't over there. But I should be able to order from them and get the stamps a lot quicker than I would from Olympia, Washington. I order 2 packs of 28mm mounts and go to choose shipping, and they want to charge me $16.00+ in shipping! That seems excessive for 2 packs of 28mm mounts. A USPS flat rate envelope would only cost $7.95, and I am sure first class mail would be even cheaper.
I ordered from Global Stamps and I just need to learn to be patient, I guess.

I only order mounts from Global. They have had the same consistent shipping costs for a long time and they always seem to have a good inventory of the different sizes on hand, though there have been times when they were out of a particular size. I also find that they get them shipped out quickly, though, like everybody else these days, they warn about shipping delays because of the postal service. Perhaps that has gotten better, however.

I buy all my mounts from iHobb. They're super quick to ship, and the shipping for small quantities is about $6-8.

I purchase my mounts from Matilda's Stamp & Coin Supplies (matildascheapsupplies.com). I usually order quantities for which flat-rate shipping fees are appropriate, but they may be able to offer shipping at lower costs. They have very fast shipping & are very responsive to e-mails.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I don't often order from Subway anymore, but I used to, particularly when they had items that no one else seemed to have. I'm in Southern California, and so at some distance from them. I found that ordering online from them was horrific when it came to the shipping charge. I learned that the best way to work with them was to call and place the order that way. They were terrifically nice on the phone, and, among other things, could tell me the shipping to the penny. Their customer-facing online order system appeared to be different from what they could do in-house. Ordering on the phone with them, several times I was able to add some more small items to my order, and not increase the shipping cost at all. That was definitely not the case using their online system. So it is possible that you might have gotten a much more reasonable charge if you had called them on Monday to order. On the other hand, my experiences were a couple of years ago, long before the pandemic, and I understand that, in recent months, trying to reach them by phone had been hit or miss. Perhaps things are running more smoothly now, as they are in some places. And yes, ordinarily I would prefer to order online than to call. (Spent too many years on the phone in my earlier days.)

Same experience as Philatarium. Always ordered by phone, lots of items available not even listed in catalog, print ads, or online. They had one person there that knew everything they had (even spare parts for binders) and could create a special order for you! Shipping was very competitive. I think the most I ever paid was still <$20 for shipping about a dozen 48pp stockbooks! But also like Philatarium, I haven't ordered from them in awhile (in my case, probably closing in on a decade). In the past 2 years, online reports have not been favorable in terms of shipping time and even unshipped items. That is not the Subway that I used to know and order from and refer others to without hesitation. I don't know what's going on. Strongly recommend talking to a real person and not an automated system.

Hi Andy In New York I use to order from them and when we moved to Georgia I also ordered. I never had a problem and they were very nice to deal with. I haven't ordered anything for ages and since my friend owned a stamp store I was able to get what I needed from the store. Global Valley was recommended to me (forgot who) but I haven't bought anything yet. I still have a stock pile of mounts, but it is getting low: Golden ValleyI remember going to the Subway arcade store whenever I was in New York. Jerry B

Global's mailing address is now in Sidney, Ohio. Same place as Amos publishing.. The owner said they were not Amos. My guess it is a former employee or something. Check the contact information.
I stopped using Subway a while back since was always out of stock of something, unreliable shipping, and percentage-based shipping costs. They did not have a flat rate.
I had switched to Global (when they were in WA) until I started using HAWID so switched to Wizard Coin and Stamp in Virginia. They ship next day and have a flat rate. They were cheapest for moderate ($60) orders. Wizard's site is SLOW...almost like Amos.
Other places like the Matilda were cheaper on larger orders.

I have a life supply of mounts that came with a large lot of stuff at an auction years ago. It appears to have been old store stock. Most are Hawid mounts but the only 28 mm are Showgard and only have 9 strips per package. Some of the Hawid 29 mm I have contain 25. Message me Andy if you wanted me to mail you some from here in Canada. Thank you for the offer, but I placed an order with Global Stamps.

If my local stamp store is any indication, people in quarantine have rediscovered collecting stamps, coins, sports cards and other collectibles. It's possible they're just slammed with orders. When all "non-essential" businesses were closed, my local store was doing very brisk "back door business." People would place orders over the phone and come knock on the door and pick them up. Perhaps Subway Stamp Shop is just experiencing the boom and overwhelmed with orders.
And you may be correct, and it's their online ordering system that's doing the price gouging on shipping and not the store itself.

So, another Subway story...
Went to order binders from them. They wanted around $20.00 to ship them. So, I called Subway and the lady I spoke with told me binders are bulky. There's a small chance shipping might be less once the warehouse packs the order. If that's the case, they'll issue me a refund. But she said she had no way to know if there would be a shipping discount.
So, I went to Amos and ordered the same 2 binders for $7.00 shipping. Between the discount on shipping and no state sales tax (Amos is in Ohio), Amos was $20.00 cheaper than Subway.
Next time I may try to ship something to my sister-in-law in New Jersey to save on the sales tax.
It sucks, because a UPS Ground shipment from them would get to my house overnight.

Hi Andy, Subway was my shop of choice for decades. I bought all of my Lighthouse material there. Starting around 2 years ago I noticed they were having 6 month shipping intervals on their Lighthouse products. I was too impatient to live with that so I cancelled multiple orders and found alternatives, usually in Canada. Since then I've placed a couple orders for items online only to receive an email the next day saying they were sorry it was out of stock. Obviously they're floundering in the wake of the pandemic as well as market pressures from the internet. It made me sad, I was able to find a lot of products from them over the years that aren't available any more. Rob

I have purchased mounts from 3 different companies here in the US over the last year or so: Global, Wizard. and IHobb. They all featured easy online ordering, had all in stock (website blocked out of stock item), and shipped the next day. Global does not sell HAWID so had to purchase those elsewhere.
I checked Sunway and their shipping started at $9 (US Mail) where Global was free for mounts over $35 and iBobb was $6. Subway wants $22 for UPS for $ 50 order of mounts. I have ordered much heavier stuff from other companies using UPS and Subway prices look like consumer pricing - meaning they did not have a contract.
My former company had a shipping contract with UPS with an amazing discount and our company was not in even in the retail business (selling goods). Of course, it was a large company.

And the Amos binder order story. I ordered the two binders from Amos around 10:00 AM EST on December 21st. I was hoping they would make it here before Christmas. Well, it didn't make it into USPS hands until 9:00 PM CST today. I didn't get an email that my order had shipped. I didn't get a tracking number. The only way I found out was because I logged into the website and viewed my receipt.

Amos Advantage is Amos Media's (formerly Scott Publishing) website. I use it frequently. They are, after all, the manufacturer of Scott albums, pages, binders, and so on. They have free shipping is you order above some amount like $65, so I delay ordering until I reach that amount. Or I add something else I "might" need to save on shipping costs, like a slipcase. I always need another slipcase. I'm not sure if they collect tax.
Subway Stamp Shop was one of my favorite companies to order from. I didn't begin buying from them until they had left New York City and were in Altoona, PA. No idea why they chose that location to move to and not a closer suburb to NYC or another (less expensive city), by the way, as they certainly would get relatively little "drop in" business out there. Maybe they just wanted the quiet life. They once had a very nice stamp supplies catalogue they would send, but I think the website has replaced that. was always happy with their discounted prices and their wide variety of stamp material other dealers did not have, foreign catalogues, different brands of albums, and so on. I often ordered through their website but sometime by phone and never saw much difference between the two. What I found more recently, though, was that Scott pages and other items I'd bought (at discounts before) were much slower to get to me because Subway was having trouble getting Amos/Scott to ship to them quickly. I talked with their main person there, a woman, and she actually told me I'd probably be better off ordering directly from Amos/Scott than from Subway. I found that refreshing, if a bit odd. I'd still buy from them, but lately I haven't been buying much.
I've bought mounts from Global Stamp (now in Pennsylvania) many times. Shipping is prompt, prices are very good, shipping costs are moderate. From Amos/Scott, I get the same service on mounts, prompt shipping, good prices and moderate shipping costs. The best approach, I've always found, is to order as large a quantity of mounts as you can from shipper which have a flat shipping rate. Global has free shipping, if I recall correctly, if you order around $35 and above. So I save up my mounts orders rather than ordering one or two packs of mounts which can get a bit expensive. I'm not too worried about different prices for mounts or different shipping charges. There is some difference between different sellers of mounts, it's true, but I just don't count pennies that carefully, I guess.
I haven't tried iHobb for mounts, but maybe I'll try them. I've used iHobb a number of times for other stamp supply orders, and they are very good, as good as any of the other companies. It's nice to have a few choices.

I don't know, I just ordered mounts and tried to get them from iHobb, but their Showgard pages refused to come up. I don't know if they're out of stock or if there's a technical issue, but almost all of their Showgard pages are grayed out. I went with Global instead. At least they worked.

My last order several months ago was from Wizard Coin and Stamp of Virginia since I wanted HAWID mounts and iHobb did not have them in stock. Global does not sell them. I ordered on Sunday and marked ready for shipment the same day. They arrived in an over stuffed mailing envelope.
