Like the CHICAGO stamp on this HW perfin. .... SP Perfin. Your SP perfin was used by Southern Pacific, the railroad company. It was in use for more than 40 years and as you can imagine, is one of the more common ones. As my catalogue says when explaining the "F" rarity rating which it holds, "these are the perfins that you could wallpaper your house with and no one would notice the difference." Maybe so, but just like the minimum value stamps in my Scott's catalogue, there are plenty of them which I have never seen in a lifetime of stamp collecting! Unfortunately, the HW perfin has been punched off-centre so it's actually incomplete. A full perfin reads "HWG" and was used by the H.W. Gossard Company, a lingerie manufacturer which still survives to this day in Britain under the name Gossard Limited. If there are any Yoopers among us, the town of Ishpeming, MI on the Upper Peninsula was a former home of one of the Gossard manufacturing factories until its closure in 1976 and the company's history is being saved by the current owners of the building. Gossard must have mailed out a lot of product catalogues in their day - this perfin is very common and it has the minimum value in the Catalog of Perfinned Precancels of the United States by John M. Randall. Ladies, if you ever wanted to have a waist diameter that was the same size as your neck, it looks like Gossard made the product just for you ... Ryan

Not exactly a relevant title beyond perfins, but I saw no reason to start a new thread (Admin, if you deem otherwise, please move!) - don't see many blocks of perfed stamps, though I doubt it's uncommon, Scott #681 6 cent John Quincy Adams (I think) M over StL - I'm guessing the St L refers to St Louis... M is (maybe) the company/corp behongd the pefin It would seem a multi-head perforator, (no accordion fold which results in reversed mirroer images of the perfin), but the left perfs is missing a pin in the top of the left leg of M, while the right perfs are missing a pin in the bottomo of th S- upside down wavy postmark... maybe New York, or something ending in NY thought it worth posting

M is (maybe) the company/corp behongd the pefin This is another railway perfin - M/STL is the perfin for the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway Company. It's been given rarity factor "E" in the catalogue, so it's not quite common enough to fit into the most common group, category "F". That perfin was found on stamps over a period which lasted almost 50 years. Ryan
