What I collect: Canada Small Queens
|
Post by rainnskittles on May 28, 2021 11:15:28 GMT
Good Morning from Buffalo, NY. My name is Frank and I specialize in the Canadian Small Queen series #34-47. Sixty years ago I started collecting US and forty years ago I switched all my attention to the small queen series. Within that series I specialize in the three cent #37 and within the thirty year span of that issue I specialize in the first 3 years of production. It's a pretty tiny wheelhouse. That series has been called "The greatest philatelic puzzle" so, of course, I got sucked into the rabbit hole. I love to correspond with others interested in that series. Pictured below are some spares. If you're a Small Queen specialist, talk to me.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Welcome to the group Frank. I am more a generalist but being Canadian I do have numerous small queens on and off covers. My reason for replying was because of this 1941 essay that was among my dad’s collection. This field of study has a long history. Possibly you have seen and read this one. I am sure the study has evolved and been elaborated on. I just took a quick photo of page 1 of 12 for you.

I'm familiar with Shoemaker and he's one of the experts I use as a research tool. Is this your dad's typed copy or was it generated by Shoemaker himself?

I'm familiar with Shoemaker and he's one of the experts I use as a research tool. Is this your dad's typed copy or was it generated by Shoemaker himself? This is from an old mimeograph copy with some of the later pages quite faint. There is a preface page unsigned describing his writings and the history of the small queens. I have kept it in my Canadian collection with the small queens in case one day I decide to do some specializing.

There are great charts that go with that for the three cent. The article was in Stamps and also in the BNAP newsletter of the time. Shoemaker lists 43 'items' ie, different printings or variations within a printing for just the three cent on those charts. I enjoy pinning down a stamp to a Shoemaker item #.

My wife did her undergrad at Wells College on the shore of Lake Cayuga in Aurora.

rainnskittles tell your wife that I am a Wells Alum too, class of 1998, just a few years before they went co-ed! My wife graduated in 1973 and her mother graduated from Wells in 1944. Her mom was crushed when they went co-ed. My wife says, "Go Odds! "

Welcome to the Forum, Frank.
it is great to see so many small queens in one place. I do have a few, both on and off cover. I have yet to fall down that rabbit hole of collecting them.

Thanks Hi Rene, Went checking for SQ threads and didn't find any active ones. I started one and hope to find a handful of SQ lovers to make it interesting. I'm having a little trouble navigating the boards here so if I missed a lively SQ thread please point me at it. Thx

A maxicard for you would be a small queen stamp affixed on the picture side of a postcard showing the same person/queen. A postmark on the stamp should be related to your queen, somehow, if possible.
