After more than a year, our local Grand Rapids, Michigan stamp club is having a show along with a dealer bourse! Trust me when I say, I have put it on my calendar. Event by Kent Philatelic Society American Legion Neal E. Fonger Post 179 Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 10 AM EDT – 4 PM EDT Welcome to our long-awaited stamp show. This is an excellent opportunity to add to your collection by checking out the offerings of our fine participating dealers! All health and safety guidelines will be observed. Admission is free, and there will be free stamps available to kids. This is a great way to introduce your children to the world of stamp collecting. I have saved my pennies from the sale of books on eBay and have several goals for when I am there: - Look for early Nigeria...Lagos, Southern and Northern and Niger Coast Protectorate - Look for modern Nigeria material (this may be a lost cause but I may be surprised) - Whatever else strikes my fancy...which is just about anything and everything. I tend to look for collections, stamps on pages grouped in manila folders by country, etc...anything where I get a lot of bang for my buck. - Invite clifstampcollector to join me from mid-Michigan and spend the day looking at stamps and perhaps catch a cup of coffee or even a beer after we are done. Hopefully he is home from his camping trip.

I received the reminder postcard in the mail today for the above named stamp show. They are calling it a bourse rather than a show, which makes more sense, and, gets me all that more eager to go and spend my carefully saved pennies. My wife has agreed to supplement my bourse experience with cash for Father's Day. I can barely contain myself.

I spent about 1.5 hours at the bourse and spent my whole budget of $100.00 cash. My favorite seller was there and I spent my money all in one place. I did try to focus on my current collecting interests including Nigeria, which, as I suspected, finding post-colonial or more modern issues from Nigeria was a challenge and there was not much available. I like buying old collections or parts of collections as I feel I get a lot of stamps for my money and there is always the challenge or excitement of occasionally finding some treasure among the common stuff that one gets with some of these collections. Most of the Nigeria I could find were pages from old collections, stapled together with other country pages like this in manila folders: The dealer also has individual sets in dealer boxes at Scott Catalogue prices but I find that I usually end up paying a lot less by buying these old collections or pages from collections and completing my sets and pages that way. In the same format I also bought country pages from a number of different countries I am either currently working, have worked on recently or have plans to work on soon. Yugoslavia is a country I am working on currently and I found a number of folders with stamps up to the 1960s which is my focus right now. I also found Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand. Finally, I bought two old HE Harris Ambassador Worldwide albums stuffed with stamps. Like I said, I only brought $100.00 cash. The dealer gave me a huge discount. If you tally up the prices on the stickers on the folders and the albums, it comes to $239.00 and I ended up paying $95.00. I also paid into a $5.00 raffle drawing when I arrived. All in all a good day and I have been greedily looking through my purchases since I came home from work last night and today.
