Dave My guess is that the second stamp has the duplex version (see the cover above) and the first stamp is the original A/3 that was not a duplex. There was also a TS duplex, which I will post when I get a chance to scan it.

My guess is that the second stamp has the duplex version (see the cover above) and the first stamp is the original A/3 that was not a duplex. Your guess is very good Mark. In vol.3 of the RPSNZ books - p48 - it states that there were 3 obliterators with A/3 and 1 duplex. The first 3 obliterators were used at different offices in/around Thames - Type 1 at Thames - type 2 at Grahamstown & type 3 at Shortland. My first A/3 - on the 1d above - is of type 2 used at Grahamstown. My 2nd A/3 is of the duplex kind. Dave NB the Thames Postal District was constituted in 1871.

A couple more. I am not sure about the "postal" fiscal, those always confuse me. Perhaps a telegraph payment.

Hi Michael
That is a nice example of the 1898 Pictorials 'London' printed 'Wakitipu' mis-spelling of 'Wakatipu' you have shown here. An early date too as this sets release date is 5 April 1898.
Perhaps an admin could move the post to the '1898 Pictorials' thread or the 'SON' thread as this is in the 'Thames Valley and Coromandel' thread and 'Sydenham' is a suburb of Christchurch - about 1000km south of the Coromandel!
Many thanks
Dave

Gold mining related is quite interesting and very pertinent to this part of NZ.

Sorry Mark Can't help at all , it is similar to ones I have seen in Australia with a similar design , but I don't have a reference. I think they were shown on another forum, which I hate to name here (I left in a rage following some public slagging and insult from the uncouth Ozzy owner) The one in my Avatar is located in BRUGES Belgium and is square not cylindrical. I wonder if Chris Beryllium Guy has come across similar in his Post box hunts ?

An old Pillar Box in Thames (sorry for the poor quality photo, I only had my cheap NZ phone). vikingeck can you identify it, it looks like the one in your Avatar? You can find some information here. One of 3 remaining in Thames. "Thames residents had suggested the design that they had seen in Australia. "Based on the French design they 'had three vertical apertures placed near the top of the receiver, which was the height that a person on horseback could post a letter, without having to dismount."(1) It is believed that the Thames boxes were designed and made based on the British model by J H Penfold. The Queen Street box has the maker's name as BUBB & SON, Victoria Foundry, Sydney." Daniel

Thanks for your post, skid . Sorry I initially missed it. I have been travelling the last 2-3 days. And thanks to Alex ( vikingeck ) for the tag, and daniel for his response. Well, that's a great postbox there, Skid, and it's nice that they put the placard on it to tell a little bit about it. As Daniel mentions in his response, the first idea that came to my mind when I saw your photo was, "Wow, that bears a striking similarity to a Penfold box." It has some definite similarities to a GB Penfold box, but there are some differences, too. Here is a photo to illustrate: As you can see from the photo, the design on the cap of this pillar box is very similar to the NZ box with the leaf array and finial. These are classic Penfold-style touches. In the UK, though, these boxes are almost always hexagonal in shape, rather than cylindrical like the NZ box. I also note that the NZ box has some nice detail at the base of the box, which the UK boxes have never had, to the best of my knowledge. Anyway, I hope this may show the similarities a bit. A very nice find, Skid.... it gives me another excuse to want to visit NZ!

I stopped at Turua to get some fish and chips on my way back from a hike up the Kauaeranga Valley and while waiting for them to be cooked I went to have a look at the Whaihou river. I passed the old post office that has been turned into a private residence, so took a photo to post (the red mail slots and flag pole can still be seen). Then when I got to the fish and chip shop I realized it is the "post office". See the red postal box and at the back on the wall are the PO boxes (red). A good illustration of the evolution of the post office in NZ. Some information about the Turua post office and an article about the opening.

Chalons with Thames cancels and a Coromandel cancel. The Thames ones all look like the duplex. I am interested to see what Grant's Coromandel cancel currently on TradeMe sells for.
