Hi There, Folks.
It’s a pleasure to join the forum. I live in Chile and have been collecting Chilean postal issues (and some BOB) for over 20 years now.
Basically, I try to limit my collection to postal issues up to 1972 both used and mint; it includes postage dues, fines, seals and postally used fiscal stamps. And no Chilean collection would be complete without an “Ambulancia” section and a little work on the Chilean Occupation of Peru during the Pacific War. I’m also rather fond of the single-ring, small town cancellations, before the word “CHILE” started to appear on them. (But, Oh Boy! They’re not like Pokemons. You ain’t never gonnna catch’em all!)
Like most philatelists, I love the detective work, the hunt, the discovery and the feeling of satisfaction when an empty gap is filled. And I must say that the digital tools we have today makes the task a lot easier. Though I should confess that despite all the information on-line, I did recently spend hours looking through Indian Feudatory States catalogus trying to identify what turned out to be a 1899 Siva’s Bow from Nepal.
- Favourite stamp in my collection; a blue colour trial of the 1c stamp of the 1910 Independence series.
- Least liked stamp; 1934 30c lilac Egaña (sorry, but it’s just so ugly and does the poor guy no justice).
- Stamp I’d most like to own; apart from the obvious things like a 1854 5c Gillet missing the word “CENTAVOS”, I’d really like to own any stamp from the 1911 Presidents series with the inverted center. About 15 years ago, I passed up the chance to buy a used 20c Orange Bulnes with the centered inverted for about $30 USD. Huuuuuge regrets.
OK. So that’s a bit about me as a collector. I only really know about Chilean stamps but if I can ever be of any help to any one, especially regarding 1900 to 1950 issues, please don’t hesitate.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Welcome Simon, My worldwide collection has a fairly good representation from Chile so your post sent me looking to see the 1934 30c Egana. At least it is colourful. I am sure you will enjoy the forum.

Welcome! I wonder if you have maxicards from Chile, maybe even with stamp about Isla de Pascua... Or, can you create maxicards? This last question I would ask any philatelist in the world...

Welcome! I wonder if you have maxicards from Chile, maybe even with stamp about Isla de Pascua... Or, can you create maxicards? This last question I would ask any philatelist in the world... Thanks for your greeting. I don't think I've ever seen a true Chilean Maxicard. I suppose if you were in the right place at the right time on the right day, it may be possible to make one. But very difficult. Let me explain a little. Since the pandemic, sales of stamps have only been on-line; you have to order them from the Philatelic Bureau. Then you have the problem of trying to get the appropriate cancellation. And though this may sound absurd, my local post office not only doesn't have manual stamping, it has never sold stamps! It seems the Post Office is actively trying to eliminate the use of stamps to send correspondence.

Simon, then your option might be to get postmarks by "philatelic mail-back", from other post offices.

Welcome! What a beautiful, fascinating country. The Mercator projection is deceptive in showing just how far away it is from the US, though it shares the Eastern time zone. Such a long flight, but without jet lag. I was there for the total solar eclipse in the Elqui valley. I came home with a taste for Pisco sours and Carmeniere.

Greetings, Simon ( may1964 ), and please accept my belated welcome to TSF! Sorry for missing your original post. Your did an excellent job on your intro post--many thanks for that. I can see that you have already started to contribute to other threads, which is great. I have an envelope full of old classic Chile, but they have never been sorted and organized. Perhaps I will consider putting Chile on my list of next countries to work on, when I am next back in the US with that part of my collection. Enjoy your time with us! -Chris ( Beryllium Guy ) A US expatriate living in England
