I have a letter from the 7th of April 1833, with very legible writing. From Pictou to Halifax, it cost 7d. It's an interesting read of life way back then!
It's a shame letter writing has all but disappeared now!

I totally agree Peter and we can add the loss of Cursive writing and the ability to spell as well. All victims of the evolving world of cyber where speed and data rule and humanity is edged out. Nowhere is this more evident than in Philately. When I see the beautiful script on so many old envelopes it saddens me to receive a piece of mail with my name digitized and misspelled, sourced by a machine and never touched by human hands. Lovely.....

It's a shame letter writing has all but disappeared now! Of course I grew up writing in cursive but sadly penmanship was never a strong point with me. I can hardly read my own hen scratching so I tend to print mostly and even that is not an art form. 🤣 My mother’s on the other hand was elegant even in her last year at 91.

I'll be contrary and say while I admire an elegant cursive (my own handwriting is an ugly chicken scratch), don't find it particularly sad that it has mostly gone as it is harder to read and write. Things change and technology often makes them easier. Case in point, my young adult son has dysgraphia, and manually writes/types with great difficulty - but due to voice dictation software has been able to write a short novel and many essays, write code, etc. Before modern technology, this would have been next to impossible.

Thanks renden. He also works with me on selling stamps online - his keen eye for detail has found many good varieties. So he's a definite keeper

I took the liberty of changing the title of this thread to share another early Nova Scotia cover from my collection. This little envelope was used on government business in 1857. It was mailed from Halifax to my hometown of Liverpool. I suspect it was from my dad's collection.

Recent posts on the Ship Covers/Cancellations thread reminded me of this cover that could be cross posted. This 1844 letter from Whiteburn, Queens County, Nova Scotia has a SHIP LETTER HALIFAX NS red cancel. I have only scanned a portion of the rather long letter and survey sketches dealing with some sort of dispute dating back to 1835 dealing with the sale or allotment of crown lands. Whiteburn is hardly known about today but in 1885 gold was discovered in Whiteburn resulting in 20 years of mining in the area. The story is in this link.

I am pretty thrilled to receive this stampless cover sent from Halifax, Nova Scotia on December 31, 1847 to D.S. Kennedy Esq., Wall Street, New York. What makes the cover exciting for me is that it was sent by Enos Collins who was born in my hometown of Liverpool, Nova Scotia on September 5, 1774. He was a privateer and ship owner with great success in the War of 1812. He moved to Halifax during this war and married into a wealthy family. He, in partnership with several other people, eventually created the Halifax Banking Company, one of the first Canadian banks. Today it is the CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce). He roared out of retirement in 1864 at the age of 90 to fight Nova Scotia's joining confederation. At his death in 1871 he was considered Canada's wealthiest man. This information is from Wikipedia link . The letter is lengthy and is dealing with a foreclosure on a piece of property and also some other dealings. I will not bore you with the full content. The scans are the front, back and the last page. I have not researched who the New York banker is. jamesw this cover will interest you.

I had replied to your post but have deleted it because one source had David Sproat Kennedy passing away in 1848 while Wikipedia has his death in 1853. link Of course my real interest is Enos Collins. I was hoping the letter would have some more interesting historical information rather than basically a financial communication.

Lovely covers Hugh ( hdm1950 ) and thanks for the showing :-) At the same time, keep in mind that Wikipedia is a tertiary source of information and for your interests in "Enos Collins", your time might be better served scrolling through the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) for more details on this Canadian character.
Both texts referenced in my own search, "Canada's entrepreneurs: ..." and "Scamps and Scoundrels.", could be good summer reading material...
Have fun and happy collecting! Yes Vince, I know that Wikipedia has to be used with an open mind. Like any successful business man there are times when things are not as bright as a short snap shot biography may show. I have read and come across his stories over the years in my readings and of course he is an important part of the history of my home town and province. His fight against joining Canada was well documented. This biography adds a bit more colour. link The museum and historical society of Liverpool, NS has found that a daughter married a man in London. A relative stated that the wealth was squandered by the English family a few generations back. Such is life.
