Rob ( REL1948), this is gorgeous! I love old albums like this, but this one seems really unusual. I am frankly surprised to see that an album published in the US includes translations of its text into multiple languages.... that's not the sort of editorial choice that I would typically associate with my native country. In any case, I love old albums, which is why I am still using those kind of headers for the stock sheets displaying my collection. Thanks for sharing this!

Interesting page both for what is illustrated, but also for what is not there ! Obvious postal stationery cut outs accepted , a Registered stamp, early Buenos Aires but none of the early Canadas , beavers , Albert etc . What did you do if you had a stamp that was not illustrated? Swap the Chalon Queen Vic for a common Ceylon.?
I’ d love some more pages please.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I am thinking that this album was by a German company and the US company name was the local store that sold it. I ssold a similar one on eBay last year but have deleted the photos. I just have the listing header 'Schutz-Marke Briefmarken Postage Stamp Album'. Mine had been a little soft covered one. Just an opinion. Hugh

I picked this up a few years ago from an antique store. It's probably late 1800s judging from the Canada stamps shown.10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, 75 pages. Lovely leatherette cover w/ gilt, inside references include a Map and a perforation gage. Imagine finding an album like this but with all the stamps shown in the pictures included ($$$$$).... This is great, ROB - love old albums - I still keep my Scott Junior Vol I and II active with some collections I do not dare switch René

Hello Hugh (hdm1950), I agree with you, I came to the same conclusion. Overall, it has a German feel in both language and the fonts used...

OK vikingeck, Just for you, a few more pages. It's undoubtedly German. The album seems to favor the Germanic countries with more space but the country titles are a dead giveaway, GrossBritannien, Frankreich...
The table of contents is fascinating too, it lists some countries I've never heard of before like "Horta" (in the Azores) and "Puttialla" (an Indian State)...
The "U.S. of America" page is interesting.... no vignettes???

The "U.S. of America" page is interesting.... no vignettes??? I actually know why this is the case. I am not quite sure when it changed, perhaps in the 1940s, but in old catalogues and albums that were published in the 1930s and earlier, there are no reproductions of US postage stamps, because it was against federal law. At least, that is my understanding. I have an old catalogue from that era, and it only shows bits and pieces of stamp designs, but no complete stamp images. And the album I have from then has no stamp images at all, only descriptions.

Wow Robert what a super reference. I've never delved into the world of custom (Steiner) or online albums (like these) but it's really interesting. I was able to find pages for "Bechuanaland". I've wanted those pages for awhile but they've been unavailable from my usual brand "Lighthouse".
Thank you so much for sharing.

The GB page is interesting as the images of the stamps include the 1887, so called Jubilee , series of bicoloured to the 1/- ,which suggests a date of around 1890 for the album. The portraits on some pages also help dating , eg France shows President CARNOT 1887-1894 when he was assassinated. I think the US may show Grover Cleveland who had two spells as President between 1885 and 1897
the other clue that the album is German is in the page numbering, presumably alphabetical , France is page 17 but Germany comes before it on page 15. ( alphabetically D for Deutsches Reich) and Egypt,(Aegypten) is on page 1 under A.

The top right corner shows Ranbirsinh Gulabsinh Jamwal (1830–1885), the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir state (1856–1885). The Jammu and Kashmir section provides some comical display. 4/1-2 are illustrations of forgeries. 4/4-6 are non-existent. 5/4 is upside down. 5/6 is a crude reproduction of telegraph stamp.

On the same page, above, the ruler on the left is, I believe, King Gojong of Joseon (later Korea) who ruled from 1864 to 1897. The image is from Wikipedia: Gojong of Korea
