I am puzzled about the numerous postings showing the backs of used stamps with bits and pieces of hinges still attached.

I am puzzled about the numerous postings showing the backs of used stamps with bits and pieces of hinges still attached. Jeff at times I do not remove hinges (manually or chemically) on pristine gums (MNH) but if I do I remove everything using stamp lift (not water or bath) as I do not want to damage the gum - Used stamps is another story René

renden - "Used stamps is another story" Yes, that was the point of my post You made a good observation on used stamps and remnants - if it is a 15 cent stamp I do not bother removing the remnants but it is a matter of choice - Thanks !

pretty much all used stamps, unless the inks are unstable get a bath to remove any remaining paper, gum or hinge remnant. The Stamp Lift brightonpete sent works well, and infact has less gum disturbance then HingeLift. On some MH stamps I will cut the hinge flap off rather than try and remove the hinge, especially if it has a higher CV

I haven't soaked a stamp in over 40 years and I have no desire to start again now. My approach is similar to that on another recent topic of discussion, moles, that is if they're not doing me any harm I tend to leave them alone (it's a shame there isn't a smiley with a much wider grin!)

when I replace a used copy of a stamp in my album with a MNH copy, the used copy goes in the bath before being put in a trading envelope.

Hello.
For me, all used stamps with any remnants will get a soak. MH stamps I will gently tease the hinge off or cut what I can off.

Handeling some 1000 used stamps each week, I can't or have not time to remove them all. But when I do I do batch loads, included cleaning. I show how in this video.

I leave remnants on all the time unless it interferes with the putting in a mount.

Hinge remnants and adhesions can make confirmation of a particular watermark difficult . I recently had a batch of GB postage dues which have the same design for 50 + years and at least 6 different watermarks , some tricky to confirm. Using a signoscope it is essential that the back is cleared of any debris.
