I'm trying to gauge a value and would like some opinions of others here before I take ebay at face value. Cheers.

gotstamps85 , this is one of many common overprinted Chinese stamps from the 1940s. This is Scott no. 690 and has a mint value of US .30c and a used value of US .25c according to the 2016 Scott catalog. If someone is trying to sell this for a very high price on eBay, I would suggest not taking the bait.

On eBay there are all sorts of sellers:
The dealers who know their stuff (but they can all make mistakes ) The amateur collector trading his spares The non collector who punts hopefully often in ignorance The āchancerā who is flying a kite The crook who misrepresents fakes and forgeries.
After some time you get to recognise what is dodgy. Your knowledge and experience steers you clear of the obvious bad items, there are genuine trades by the 1000s but there are always the chancers.
remember just because a stamp has a price tag of $1000 on eBay it is only worth what someone will pay .overpriced items are always there ā¦.they just donāt sell !

I'm just glad I can check here if I have something that's genuinely rare / valuable before I think of putting it up for sale. I'm still learning. And I would hate to be ripped off myself.

I'm just glad I can check here if I have something that's genuinely rare / valuable before I think of putting it up for sale. I'm still learning. And I would hate to be ripped off myself. Well I have been with eBay for 15 years, done 5000+ trades as a buyer and a seller . I have never been ripped off, and only had a dozen items claim refund due to lost in transit ā did not receiveā . my only buying rule is , if the image is small, blurry or indistinct , I canāt see the condition, donāt buy! A good image should tell all I need to know. There may have been occasions where I sold some unusual item too cheaply ā¦well tough, but there have been several occasions where an item I thought worth a few Ā£ has taken off into the stratosphere at Ā£Ā£Ā£ when two keen bidders spotted a rarity I had not recognised. eBay has good and bad points, swings and roundabouts , but on the whole I canāt complain. It is a very convenient world wide market and ideal for trading stamps.

I agree. I've bought a few recent loft finds off ebay to sort through for ~Ā£10 a lot. That's where this stamp came from. The bundle also came with a cool ~1940s/50s looking stamp book (The Weston Mounty), map and other paraphernalia. I will post pics up here later this evening. (My wife tells my I've watched too much American Pickers / Bargain hunt lol.)

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Great synopsis and advice. Having been a seller/buyer since 2000 I remind friends to check the sold items to see where the market is price wise. You can ask whatever you like but what people have actually paid is the reality of the situation. My relationship with eBay is a love/hate one. As their market stopped growing their fees went up. I especially object to fees on shipping on auction style listings. That being said they still offer the best exposure.

No they are not ! ā¹ļøDefinitely not funny šššš Especially agree with hdm1950, fees on the mailing charge is extortion But fees from auction houses can be even worse. Lotting charges, buyerās premium, seller commission, compulsory insurance and sales tax ,Vat, all have to be factored in to a sale or purchase and can sometimes add more than 25% to a purchase. Between buyer invoice and seller receipt an auction house pulls in around 50% of what the seller achieves an item with a hammer price of Ā£100 is invoiced to the buyer at Ā£125+. And the seller gets around Ā£75 .and the auctioneer is laughing all the way to his next glossy catalogue ebay for all its faults is cheaper ,but least expensive all round is selling here on TSF š

Ha... I have one of these and saw it listed for hundreds on several ebay listings. š¤ Honestly, is ebay just full of chancers..? I saw similar listings for this particular stamp as well and just rolled my eyes. While catalog prices are not retail prices they do at least help gauge what you can expect to buy and sell a stamp for. I think it is also worth saying that there is a lot of false information on Youtube and other on-line platforms centered around the idea that overprinted stamps are somehow always more valuable than the same stamp without an overprint. While this can be true in some cases and for some countries for a small subset of stamps, it is not always true and it is best to consult a catalogue. I am currently working on Hungary which has a number of post-war issues that are overprinted for one reason or another. Most of these stamps are minimum catalogue value which for Scott, is US .25c. I would never expect to sell my duplicates of these stamps, however, for more than pennies, if they sold at all. There are also sites like Colnect, which are free membership, that can help you with pricing too. Also, I agree with everything that Alex ( vikingeck) says about ebay.

Ok I will check them out. Thanks. I will be honest, I'm thinking of getting into trading of stamps and other collectibles as a hobby. As I'm currently also raising cash for a mortgage deposit, it wouldn't hurt to stumble upon a little gem
