I am an analytical chemistry professor at Rutgers University specializing in non-destructive spectroscopic analysis of philatelic material. I have worked on characterization of the Grinnell Hawaiian Missionary Stamps using micro energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), ATR-FT-IR, and micro Raman spectroscopy. These methods are totally non-destructive and there is no damage to the stamps even on the microscopic scale. In addition, I have collaborated with R.P. Odenweller in the characterization of the 1 d Chalon heads printed in London and printed in New Zealand ("The New Zealand London Print One Penny: The Search for
a Reliable, Repeatable Test.") My focus is on the chemistry of the paper and printing inks. I have accepted characterization of many philatelic material sent to me by numerous collectors and analyzed these materials without charge.
If you have any philatelic material that you would like analyzed, please contact me. It is a pleasure and honor to join this board hopefully to provide additional information on the chemistry of different philatelic material. I am a member of AIEP (International Association of Philatelic Experts). I look forward to discussion in this board.

Hi Eugene and welcome, On another Board Forum there was much (heated) discussion on the genuine state or otherwise of a trio of GB penny reds from Plate 77 on a cover from Guernsey in the hand it was said of Victor Hugo. I have no doubt you are familiar with the controversy . Can I ask if you were engaged at any point in the X-ray and Raman spectroscopy of that item ? Alex

Welcome Eugene.
I'm a member of the RPSL so have read the Odenweller article (September 2019 of the The London Philatelist). It was very interesting.

No, I have not participated in that study but would welcome anyone to send me stamps for analysis or if you are close to NJ, please feel free to stop by my laboratory. This shows the instrument that I have, micro EDXRF using a beam spot size of 20 microns. We can image the entire stamp and look at specific features in philatelic material.

Alex I checked my records and yes, I did micro EDXRF and micro Raman of these stamps. Somehow plate 77 did not ring a bell until I checked my files. Very interesting study.

eugene , Your time permitting, members may be interested in explanations of the various methods used when analyzing philatelic material. One or more threads created in the Philatelic Links & Useful Tools board would be appreciated.
