Just looking at the photo you have provided, I'd say it is a second printing of 18. The paper looks like it is hard paper, not a soft porous paper like what 4 or the 1st printing of 18 would be. But that is just looking at the photo. Paper is the tell-tale sign for this one. Unitrade doesn't differentiate between the two printings, so I guess values are the same.
That's just my inexperienced opinion of course, others may differ.

The paper is very thin, but stiff. Scanned the backside.

Thin, stiff paper, it's 18. Sorry it's not 4, that's quite a drop in value, even in that condition!

Well I think it's nice anyway. I came over a lot of Newfoundland stamps. I have given them a good was and dried them. Start sorting them now.

Thanks for your post, Torbjørn ( tobben63). It looks like an interesting stamp, for sure. You may wish to have a look here at Morten's ( classicalstamps) website: stampforgeries.com/forged-stamps-of-newfoundland-1857-1862-page-2/These early Newfoundland issues were forged extensively, and to be honest, unless you can see the engraving in reality much more clearly than how it looks on the scan, I am thinking it is more likely a forgery than a genuine one. To me, at least, your image looks closest to the Sperati forgery on Morten's site. Other opinions are welcome, of course, as I have no special expertise in this area.

Wish we could include PDFs here. Got a PDF "Newfoundland Fakes and Forgeries" by Ed Wener..36 pages. Great write up. Thanks for your comment, Robert. I did a quick search, and the PDF of Wener's write-up is available for free download here: www.jacestamps.com/e-books/Newfoundland_Stamps_Fakes_and_Forgeries.pdfI agree that it looks quite good, and I will have a closer look later today. Thanks again, Robert, it is much appreciated!

OK, Torbjørn ( tobben63), here is a little more comparison study on my part: Tobben, I have taken the image you provided, and I have compared it with images from Morten's ( classicalstamps) website. I don't know if my earlier thought that your stamp is a Sperati forgery is correct or not, but comparing yours to the genuine, the level of detail in the engraving does not look the same. I am sorry to say it, but I am still thinking that yours is more likely a forgery than genuine. I also note that yours seems to be on very white-looking paper, and perhaps a bit more porous or rough than the genuine, too. I have no special expertise in this area, so of course, other comments are welcome.

That was a good comparison Chris. I'm confident with the fact that this stamp is a fake, in fact it is something to save, but of course mark as fake. A genuine one would of course hav been better... Some of the reason for the white paper is that I soak all old stamps with a good dash of neutral dish washing liquid.

It looks quite bright compared to the others. I have never used dish soap when I soak stamps, but perhaps I should consider it.

Sperati used photolitho and the original was engraved. Look at the stamp with a 20X eye piece at a slight angle and you should see that the ink is slightly raised if it is an engraved stamp.
