Hello, As a new member I would like to introduce myself. My name is Michael and I live in the Netherlands. My first stamp was given in 1969 by my uncle. I was only 6 years old. As my uncle emigrated to South Africa and returned it was a stamp from South Africa. Stamp collecting stayed with me so far for the last 52 years. I started with stamps from the Netherlands buying the new issues, FDC and collecting what was given to me. I visited stampclubs to expand my collection. Older men (in my eyes in those days) with big sigares gave me stamps. I still remember! It was 1977 my first visit to New Zealand. We went to friends and their son also had some stamps. But they are much more attractive I thought. It was the 1972 Vintage Car set that opened my eyes. New Zealand stamps; thats what it would and should be for the next 44 years. My intrest went more and more to the first stamps with special intrest in the 1898-1900 Pictorials. A few days ago I saw at the stamp forum: New Zealand: 'Socked on the Nose' SON cancels! I also have been collecting SON cancels for many years and do have a nice collection. I like to share my intrest but also hope to find some answers on questions I like to share later. Thank you for reading my introduction Happy stampcollecting. Michael New Zealand: 'Socked on the Nose' SON cancels

Welcome to the Forum Michael (otira), Your New Zealand collection sounds impressive. You'll find an active group here often discussing the New Zealand Chalons in depth. I look forward to all that you have to share.

Welcome Michael to TSF - The Stamp Forum Particularly nice that you collect the stamps of New Zealand amongst other countries no doubt. The 1898 Pictorials are an exceptionally nice area to settle on and collect in earnest. They are a lovely set - particularly the 'London' prints. There are a few of us NZ specialists on this forum - although most of us do specialize on the Chalons in particular - a few of us also enjoy other areas of the country as well. My focus is on the Chalons - but I have a large NZ collection with emphasis on anything pre 1950 (pre QE2). I love collecting the closed post offices postmarks, SONs, postal history etc etc - and research into all of the pathways it takes you down. May I ask why you have called yourself (your handle) 'Otira'. Is it because of the Otira Gorge on the 5d Pictorial perhaps ? Enjoy your time here and see you around. Dave

Hi Dave,
I hope to find an answer on the forum about the 1898 Pictorial 2,5d. Wakitipu / Wakatipu stamp. As the 2,5d Wakitipu issued on April 5th 1898 was spelt incorrect the 2,5d. Wakatipu was issued. I am trying to find out when the 2,5d. Wakatipu came available at the counter as well as proof/scans of the earliest dated 2,5d Wakatipu. Can you help or anybody at the forum?
Thank you. Michael

Hi Michael
I am sure that if you ask those questions in the appropriate thread - the 'New Zealand: 1898-1908 Pictorials' thread - that you'll get the answer. There are a few of us here with reference books we can look into for answers for you.
I am not sure that anyone here specializes in the 1898s, so we can all learn together :-)
Dave
