What I collect: The World...just printing and mounting as I go...call me crazy!

Recently, as I work on various countries I have come across stamps that have a common theme and it has intrigued me enough to want to start a thematic thread. Many of these commemoratives are more obscure and don't have the interest that the more popular themes have which is more or less why I like to highlight them. I am often struck by how interesting some of the designs are too. This thread is specifically about Roads, Highways, Traffic, Traffic Safety and related topics. It is not about cars, automobiles, trucks, etc...as there are other transportation related threads about that. I think we will all be surprised at the number of stamps that are out there about this topic. So, here are several stamps that I have come across over the last couple of months: One of a set of 4 stamps issued in 1972, this stamps is Nigeria Sc. no. 280 from the series Introduction to right-hand driving in Nigeria.

This stamp is part of a 10-stamp series issued by Ecuador for the Completion of the Pan-American Highway. The series includes both commemoratives and air post stamps. This 30c denomination is Sc. no. 454.

These two stamps, also part of a 4-stamp series, were issued by Ecuador in 1971 as part of the Pan American Road Congress, 11th Ed. and are Sc. nos. C488 and C487. I find the design on the right particularly striking and well done.

I think everyone will know these stamps. Issued by Germany in 1971, these two denominations issued for Child Road Safety are part of the Accident Prevention series. The two denominations were issued for West Germany as well as Germany-Berlin. The Sc. nos. are: 1081, 1082, the Berlin issues are 9N323 and 9N323A.

Great idea for a thread! To mirror how you started it, two more of the stamps from Nigeria to inform the population of the change to right-side driving on April 2 nd, 1972:

Just like Nigeria, Sweden also switched from driving on the left side to the right, for them on September 3 rd, 1967. Two stamps were issued to publicize the event:

On April 7 th, 2004, which was declared World Health Day on Road Safety, a joint issue between Italy, France, and the UN Geneva Postal Administration took place. Here is a philatelic cover with all three stamps and their first-day-of-issue cancels:

I've posted these before, but they really belong here. They are the two stamps issued by China in 2019 for the opening of the Tibet Highway, which culminates at 5231 meters above sea level:

This Romanian stamp always strikes my sense of humour, with the very odd sense of proportions on it. The car is very small compared to the child on the bike (especially the back half of the car, which looks like it's about as long as the headlamp is wide) and the severe angle of the bike's front wheel surely means the kid is about to throw himself off the bike at any moment. I always thought that the stamp artist started his painting under the assumption that the stamp was wider than it was tall, and when told it actually went the other way around, did the bare minimum needed to alter his painting to make it fit. It looks like if they actually had a collision, it would be a fair contest - maybe the huge child would win and the tiny car would be destroyed. ha ha Ryan

From 1997 to 1999, Canada issued a set of 12 stamps, one per province or territory, on the theme of scenic highways: Yes, technically, Nunavut became a territory in 1999, so a 13 th stamp may have been in order, but one would be hard-pressed to find a highway there, although I'm sure if there was one it would be scenic!

In 1975, the Central African Republic issued a set of five stamps featuring various road signs on the theme of the "Code de la Route" ("Laws of the Road", in French), YT #237-241. I wish I had them to show. The ones I do have, though, are the two from that series that were re-issued in 1977 with an "Empire Centrafricain" overprint (YT #270 and 302):

On the topic of road signs, here's a French stamp on the theme of road safety, issued in 1968. Note the old style of the French stop sign on the right, before the standardization of signage in the 1970s across Europe, which gave us the North-American octogonal design:

Another part of the signage of French roads are the "bornes kilométriques" (kilometer markers), that are positioned along the road side every kilometer and often indicate, not only the position along the road, but also the distance to the next town or landmark in both directions. They are usually stone pillars, about 50cm tall, and the round top is painted either red or yellow depending on whether this is a major or minor roadway. The red used to mean a national road and the yellow a departmental one, but that distinction disappeared in the early 2000s with new rules about devolution whereby the management of the national roads was, for the most part, transferred to regional and local authorities. The borne kilométrique shown in this stamp refers to a very special road, the "Voie Sacrée" (Sacred Way). This was the one road to Verdun during WWI that stayed in French hands throughout the whole conflict, and therefore could supply this essential part of the front and the very intense operations that took place there.

Another common sign on French roads is this type, shown here on a MonTimbraMoi personalized stamp (but issued by La Poste as part of a thematic booklet), which indicates which village or town you are entering, but also, more importantly, that city driving rules are now in effect (speed limit of 50 km/h unless otherwise specified, no high beams, etc...).

Issue from France in 1981 from the campaign against drunk driving. The full slogan is : "Boire ou conduire, il faut choisir" (Drink or drive, one must choose). The phrase became so well-known, the stamp only needed to mention the first half.

A couple of cartoon first-day covers featuring the U.S. 1965 Traffic Safety stamp, Sc. 1272, prepared by W. Frank Spoone.
I have always like the colors combination used on this stamp.

Algeria issue from 1978 showing a construction crew working on the African Unity Road, also known as Trans-Saharan highway. This road project has been decades in the making. Work was halted for many years and resumed in the early 2010s, with a planned completion date in 2015, but then was halted again as the areas the road is to cross are being challenged by forces hostile to the government (even more so in the other Saharan countries the road is to traverse).
