Roads, Highways, Traffic and Traffic Safety on Stamps

This stamp is part of a 10-stamp series issued by Ecuador for the Completion of the Pan-American Highway. The series includes both commemoratives and air post stamps. This 30c denomination is Sc. no. 454.

I think everyone will know these stamps. Issued by Germany in 1971, these two denominations issued for Child Road Safety are part of the Accident Prevention series. The two denominations were issued for West Germany as well as Germany-Berlin. The Sc. nos. are: 1081, 1082, the Berlin issues are 9N323 and 9N323A.

Yes, technically, Nunavut became a territory in 1999, so a 13^th stamp may have been in order, but one would be hard-pressed to find a highway there, although I'm sure if there was one it would be scenic!

On the topic of road signs, here's a French stamp on the theme of road safety, issued in 1968. Note the old style of the French stop sign on the right, before the standardization of signage in the 1970s across Europe, which gave us the North-American octogonal design:

Another part of the signage of French roads are the "bornes kilométriques" (kilometer markers), that are positioned along the road side every kilometer and often indicate, not only the position along the road, but also the distance to the next town or landmark in both directions. They are usually stone pillars, about 50cm tall, and the round top is painted either red or yellow depending on whether this is a major or minor roadway. The red used to mean a national road and the yellow a departmental one, but that distinction disappeared in the early 2000s with new rules about devolution whereby the management of the national roads was, for the most part, transferred to regional and local authorities.

The borne kilométrique shown in this stamp refers to a very special road, the "Voie Sacrée" (Sacred Way). This was the one road to Verdun during WWI that stayed in French hands throughout the whole conflict, and therefore could supply this essential part of the front and the very intense operations that took place there.
