to the forum, mudgie! 1971 is pretty much where I stop British stamps, except for the Machin's. Although those are in a state of disarray until I figure out what I have. Only a fraction of all issued. And I do have a few post '71. Lots of info here with a lot of friendly members! Peter

Hi, mudgie, and a belated welcome to TSF! I saw your comment in the Shout Box about one of the points in my Newsletter article, so thanks for the feedback! I am curious to know how you came by the information, as I did attempt to research the location a bit, but I didn't find anything at the time. Anyway, welcome again and thanks.... -Chris ( Beryllium Guy)

Hi, mudgie , and a belated welcome to TSF! I saw your comment in the Shout Box about one of the points in my Newsletter article, so thanks for the feedback! I am curious to know how you came by the information, as I did attempt to research the location a bit, but I didn't find anything at the time. Anyway, welcome again and thanks.... -Chris ( Beryllium Guy ) The building looked late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, was on the then edge of town on the main route for the west and I noticed the distinctive bay front typical of toll houses that gave the pikeman a clear view of the road in both directions. The arrival of the railway in 1844 inevitably reduced its importance and in the 1880s the turnpikes were closed with about 5000 tollhouses being sold off and either demolished or, as in this case, converted to another use.

Very cool, daniel and mudgie, I appreciate the information. As I said near the end of the article, one of things I love about the Forum is how much I have learned since I have become a member, and how much I continue to learn virtually every time I log on. Thanks to you both for contributing to my education for today!
