What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

No, I don't think so. It's quoting a guy who makes the rather spurious claim that people won't want to collect stamps if it's no longer the Royal Mail that is issuing them.

thanks Ryan, that is what I assumed, but I got to thinking what if the US post office went private and decided to no longer honor the mint stamps issued by the usps?

Shall I try to use up my unwanted US mint stamps on this year's Christmas cards? Actually, that's what I've been trying to do for a long time, now. And still there are heaps of them.

stolzpup, my problem is that I keep buying mint us postage if I see lots for 60 - 70% of face. I just can't help it. At the rate I mail stuff, I have enough to last me until I am about 120 years old.

For all intents and purposes the USPS is private. It has a lot of regulation placed upon it, and by law it's forced to use certain services the government offers, but it stopped being a division of the US Government, when Nixon dissolved the US Post Office Department and replaced it with the USPS.

There would be a grace period anyhow to either use up what you already have or possibly even an exchange. i sort of wish the USPS would go private in some respects.

Andy, I remember it well, as I worked there when we changed from the USPO to the USPS.

With the USPS having pre-paid for federal benefits for the next 70 years, the government will never cut them loose. They can't afford to write that refund check. And that 70 years of prepayment is the #1 reason they are so deep in the hole now. There are def other factors, but that's the #1 line item right now.

Well they could privatize (sub out to private firms) and not hire anymore help (leave that up to the private firms) and only pay out to the current employees. Now of course that's just a wild first thought because I have no earthly idea about the inner workings of the USPS.

Does anyone know what the Netherlands did when they privatized a while back? Did old stamps still remain valid?
