There are numerous cards with scenes and maps of different French Colonies, plus many showing aspects of daily life. These were issued by many chocolate companies such as Nestle,Suchard and Cailler. These make a nice addition to my collection of French Colony stamps. The following cards were produced by Cafes Gilbert,a coffee producer with factories in Paris and Poitiers.

A selection of cards issued by the Chocolaterie d,Aiguebelle ,showing a map and scenes of each colony. The reverse of each card contained information about the colony...chief cities, products and climate. In the example of Senegal...hot and unhealthy for Europeans.

Here is one from Chocolat Poulain depicting a Moroccan 'rekka' or postal courier and a local stamp from 1892 for the Tangier-Fez route: On the back, the card informs the late nineteenth century chocolate consumer that "Despite its proximity to Europe, Morocco does not yet have and organized regular postal system, nor much of any administration. Education is in a pitiful state, and industry is completely degenerate. The Sultan, who is both the spiritual and secular leader, does not have any ministers but in order to govern and administer, receives the advice of a few favorites, who are also charged with executing his orders. Meanwhile, the French, Spanish, and English post offices have been established in Tangier for service within that town. Several local services have been constituted among certain important towns. For the rest of the country, one irregularly employs native messengers."

anglobobVery nice - have not been yet to St. Pierre & Miquelon....not that far from Edmundston but you have to drive # hours for the Ferry to Newfoundland and take a ride to another Ferry to this Territorial Collectivity of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and no passport required for Canadian citizens (I would bring mine) Long journey, tiny Island........
