Stamps of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote and inhospitable collection of islands, consisting of South Georgia and a chain of smaller islands known as the South Sandwich Islands. South Georgia is 165 kilometers (103 mi) long and 35 kilometers (22 mi) wide and is by far the largest island in the territory. The South Sandwich Islands lie about 700 kilometers (430 mi) southeast of South Georgia. The territory's total land area is 3,903 km (1,507 sq mi). The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) are about 1,300 kilometers (810 mi) west from its nearest point.
The South Sandwich Islands are uninhabited, and a very small non-permanent population resides on South Georgia. There are no scheduled passenger flights or ferries to or from the territory, although visits by cruise liners to South Georgia are increasingly popular, with several thousand visitors each summer.
The United Kingdom claimed sovereignty over South Georgia in 1775 and the South Sandwich Islands in 1908. The territory of "South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands" was formed in 1985; previously, it had been governed as part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. Argentina claimed South Georgia in 1927 and claimed the South Sandwich Islands in 1938.
Argentina maintained a naval station, Corbeta Uruguay, on Thule Island in the South Sandwich Islands from 1976 until 1982 when it was closed by the Royal Navy. The Argentine claim over South Georgia contributed to the 1982 Falklands War, during which time Argentine forces briefly occupied the island. Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
In 1985, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ceased to be administered as a Falkland Islands Dependency and became a separate territory. The King Edward Point base, which had become a small military garrison after the Falklands War, returned to civilian use in 2001 and is now operated by the British Antarctic Survey.

Oops, REL1948 I think auto-correct changed Malvinas to Maldives! Maldives are far, far away from here and a bit more hospitable too boot! Thanks Peter (brightonpete), Great catch. I hope no one was using my description to make travel plans, they wouldn't bring the right clothes...
You're right on both accounts. My original draft had Malvinas but after I copied it and sent it through a checker it was changed and I didn't notice it.

Thanks for your post, Rod. I hate to be the one to have to say this, but the first image in your post is misplaced in this thread. The Sandwich Islands are another name for the Hawaiian Islands, not to be confused with the South Sandwich Islands, which are the ones that this thread is about. Full disclosure: I haven’t done any research (yet) to determine why two groups of Islands with such similar names would, in fact, turn out to be nowhere near each other! If I find out anything interesting, I will post again to share it.

I believe the 4th Earl of Sandwich was the sponsor / patron of Captain James Cook the British navigator and cartographer who’s extremely accurate charts of the St Lawrence Estuary in the Canadian wars with the French led to his appointment to explore and chart the southern oceans in search of the “missing continent “ that was believed must exist .
Cook reached edge of Antarctica, discovering islands he named the South Sandwich , and on his Pacific voyages charted NewZealand and much of the Eastern coast of Australia before heading to the North American coast round Vancouver, His final landfall took him back to Hawaii which he had previously named the Sandwich Islands in honour of his patron .
it seems the busy Earl made the slice of beef on bread snack popular , and while not inventing it , the snack became known as the “Sandwich”.

I'll remove the image. Always happy to be corrected in pursuit of the truth
South Sandwich Islands wiki Note to self: not mentioned in Trade and dominion (Parry)
