What I collect: My focus is on Wild Mammals on maximum cards. Occasionally, I get or create maximum cards with other animals, or any other topic.

I want to know about commercial use for images of picture postcards, especially under USA copyright law.
Let's say the postcards are from my physical collection. Some have been used to create maxicards (derivative work?).
What postcards images can be used to sell T-shirts, etc?
Thank you all!

I saw some opinions from lawyers about 1927, 1923 and 1921 as the year before which there is no IP protection, "for sure". Now, which lawyers are right?...pants on FEUER...

I believe that any images published before 1927 are in the public domain in the U.S. as of this year. Not a lawyer, though!

It's complicated. Anything 95 years before present (as January 1) is in the public domain. Between then and 1978 it depends on whether it was published with notice, renewed, etc. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_in_the_United_States for a summary. This is for the US. Other countries may differ.

I was reading that Disney's Steamboat Willie (early variation of Mickey Mouse) copyright expires in 2024. It had been extended by several copyright law changes by Congress.

The Cornell University Library's guide on copyright provides (almost) everything one needs to know about determining what remains copyrighted and what is in the public domain (from a U.S. perspective). Good luck trying to sort it out! The bottom line is that there is no simple answer to the question.

95 years... How about the stamp(s) from a postcard? Which countries have copyright even for stamps older than 95 years? Maybe most countries?
