The Czech Influence in Texas
Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas
SPJST was founded July 1, 1897, in La Grange, Texas, by early Czechoslovakian pioneers as a fraternal benefit society to ensure the financial security of its members. SPJST stands for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas, or Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. Immigrants settled in some 250 Czech communities mostly on the Blackland Prairie. Lavaca and Fayette Counties were heavily settled, with small centers appearing in Brazos, Burleson, and Williamson Counties.
Taylor Texas is in Williamson County.
