Early Spain experts, hark please: Scott #21, 2r vermillion, now catalogs at $12K--a drop from $15K a few years ago. Question: Has this stamp ever been faked to your knowledge? The Scott catalog says nothing whatever about the possibility; the few reference guides to fakes I own also do not cover it. Before I go spending time researching, can anyone mercifully spare me having to rediscover the wheel? I have a pristine unused copy, no gum--and the paper seems right. It came to me in a very upscale horde with many used 19th century stamps in the $200-$500 range, and it was not singled out from the mass--a good sign, all else considered. But one always has to ask oneself: Can this really be real? Any help will be appreciated.

Once again a picture is essential.
it is unlikely that a European collector will use Scott.

OK, you've got a picture.
And which catalog for Spain is most used in western Europe, please?

I know of 17 different forgeries of this stamp. Almost certainly more exist.
15 of them are shown/described in "Graus' - Falsos Postales de Espana" - very good book on the forgeries of classic Spain.

And which catalog for Spain is most used in western Europe, please? Adam, it is not my area, but to answer your question, I think that Edifil is used by many if not most serious collectors of the stamps of Spain here in Europe.

To save you the trouble: Edifil Specialized is a great catalog for Spain. I have it, but it does not mention anything about forgeries.
Tip: Instead of relying on catalogs to tell about the existence of forgeries, assume all classic stamps have been forged.

Sadly, anything that stunning should be assumed to be as crooked as a twig until documented otherwise. There is more than enough classic Spain gunk to drive anyone right into Gresham's Law. I'd see a glass half empty until you have an attestation. A scrupulous seller wouldn't offer without. If you ever plan to sell, or your heirs might, it will be mighty handy.

For your research: This one is genuine (it has a Comex certificate). Genuine ones has about 10 characteristic signs to look for.
