OK, and here's another puzzle--to me, anyway--since I am going through my Spain album for the first time in some years. Scott says its #49 is green, and I have one of those. But I also have one, identical design in every way (says "Correos" and says "2 Cuartos"), but it's red. Has a single-line vertical pen cancel, and, regrettably, a small pinhole in the center. What is this, anyone know? Revenue? Telegraph? Can't find anything about it, and it's not Cuba or Philippines either--wrong currency. Help, please.

adamgarfinkle , You'll find that few, if any, are able to assist without the addition of one or more images. Not everyone here uses Scott.

Is it a stamp or is it a cut out from a stationary or something like that.

I'm afraid that it can't be a cut square, as the first Spanish stationery was issued some years after that woman was forced to flee to exile, in 1868.

I believe it is a pen canceled (maybe demonetized?) Spain color proof. There are several different color/trial proofs for this 2 cuartos stamp. Guess the green one became the final selection. Hard to say for sure from the picture, but likely carmine on colored paper that is either rose or yellowish/buff (depending on how you ID/translate colors). In the Galvez catalog: 250 rose on rose paper 251 carmine on rose paper 252 carmine on yellowish/buff(?) paper The Galvez catalog has "used" listed as "used pen" which I interpret as "pen canceled". I don't know enough about Spanish postal history to understand if that means really postally used or demonetized. I will leave that to someone else to explain, as I would like to know. I don't have access to a Filabo catalog -- that might shed more light on your stamp. Edit: please make sure read next post by cursus regarding "demonetized"

I'm not a Spanish stamps collector, but I've on my library both Edifil Especializado and Filabo catalogs as well as the "Guia Tort-Nicolau". I can read Spanish. As fas as I know, "pen cancelled" is not he same as "demonetized". The later is indicated by two printed lines over the stamp.

Thank you cursus! That answered my question.

A demonetized proof, messed with subsequently, sounds plausible.
Thank you.

cursus explained that it was not demonetized. Just a pen cancel.
