I’m curious about the cancels on these three stamps from France. The first two (Scott #159) have V-shaped cancels that appear to be hand drawn with a violet pencil. Both are gummed. When the bottom edge of stamp 1 and the top edge of stamp 2 are joined using Photoshop, the cancels align, which suggests that this may be a type of manually applied precancel. The margins on these two stamps are very similar, suggesting they may even be from the same sheet. The third stamp (Scott #165) has a similar V-shaped cancel that appears to be applied with blue ink. This stamp has no gum, and the cancel is slightly visible on the back of the stamp. Has anyone seen other cancels like these? Thanks!

Thanks for an interesting post, kappa1. Let's tag some of our members who are quite experienced with France to see if they can help: hrdoktorx, anglobob, renden, stainlessb, chrischross.... Apologies to anyone I may have forgotten; this list was off the top of my head.

Same here, never seen - looks like a "pen" cancel with V as in Victory (WW I)

I quickly looked through one of my stock books and pulled these out- I suppose it could be "V" for Victory, but I suspect it is more likely a postal clerk/carrier discovering some stamps that missed being cancelled and made sure the stamp could not be reused. i have seen similar markings on stamps up to current day (felt marker or ink pen). I have never seen any reference to this (and I admit I haven't really looked) but it would seem if it did add CV, it would be very difficult to authenticate and forgeries would abound the 50c has a similar "V" and the 15c must have been the result of too much coffee or great irritation !

Having often seen this, I can say that it is simply a cancellation made by the postman. Everyone had their own habits, some made crosses, others crossed out or crossed out. The goal was to not be able to reuse the stamps.
