What I collect: Japan 1890s -2012

Hello all,
I am glad to find a forum to be able to discuss and share my interest in Japanese Stamps. I started collecting in around 1968, and had a decent collection growing in my then bright new Scott Japan Speciality Album but sadly had to sell my collection around 1980 when i was starting out as a newly married young artist venturing forth into the jungle of the art world.
Now many years later, I have returned and managed thanks to the NY Stamp co. to find a nice Scott Japan Album with a collection of decent mostly mint but sadly hinged stamps up thru 1965. I have managed to purchase the next suppliment and hope to find another old style 2 square post Scott Album to continue up to maybe around 1980 or 90. I am not fond of the most modern Japanese issues which have gotten rather wild but I love the art featured stamps, national park series and the general connection with Japanese history and culture which have been a life long interest of mine.
I hope to meet and share with some of you all, and thank you all for having such a nice forum to share on.
I live in Colorado, in a small mountain town in the southwest of the state and tho I am retired from my career as an artist, i continue to do creative work as a 3d Graphics asset maker and developers for simulations both recreatioinal and for more serious uses. This combines my interests in art and history as i focus on doing historical restorations using various sim software and games.
thank you all again
yours
Chris G.

Welcome, Chris, to TSF! While I do not collect Japan, I am always interested in learning more about stamps from other areas. Please feel free to share pics of your stamps.

crisger, I also have a Scott Specialty album for Japan. I have collected Japan off and on since I was in high school and bought the album. I supplemented it for quite a while and also was purchasing Japan new issues at one time but stopped back in the 90s. I am a worldwide collector now and frequently jump around and work on what interests me at the moment but I inevitably return to Japan after a while.

Welcome! I have a ton of Japanese stamps circa 1930s that I will be looking to trade at some point. I am in the middle of sorting my grandpa's collection. I'm also in a small mountain town - Bend, Oregon. Enjoy the forum!

wow what a nice welcome! i am touched and happy to be here with such nice people. thanks re my paintings, and that was nice of you to share the link Steve thanks. I am glad to hear from fellow collectors of Japan, Darrin, i look forward to chatting with you about it, our stories are very similar I was just before high school when i started collecting .... and am happy i returned. Was lucky to find a nice good condition Scott album. From looking at the recent stamps from Japan, i think i may extend my collecting up into the 90s there are some nice ones. Right now i am filling in air mail, and some other significant types of issues, i am glad to see there is reasonable availalbitity in the current marketplace. I hope to ask for advice on some technical things like finding clear and archival mounts for the unusual size plate blocks and covers from Japan, i am having to order a bunch of diffent kinds to find what i need. So again thank you all, I know we all have determination and fortitude to collect and study what we like but it sure is nice to be able to share with other like minded folks. cheers and thanks Chris

thanks again for the welcome and the kind words about my creative work. One of the reasons l like the Japanese stamps is that they use a lot of their beautiful art work for stamps, and have for many years.
this seems a very friendly place, That is nice for us with this interest.

Thanks again for the kind replies, biglavalamp i really like that painting by Turner you use for an avatar showing one of the great old ships of the line of the British Navy being towed by a "modern" (for that age) steam tug. A lovely painting, i study and enjoy naval history a lot so noted that as soon as i saw it. nice o ne.
