Dear fellow stamp collectors, I have some questions relating to the following Canadian cover: What are (1), (2), (3) called officially? I found on Google that (1) is 'sprayed-on cancellation', is (2) simply (hand stamped) 'cancellation'? (3) sometimes appears on the front side of the enveloppe, sometimes on the back. Is there any rule? When does it appear on a cover? Does a Canadian cover usually have both kinds of cancellation (1) and (2) at the same time? Or is this a special case?

#2 is definitely a hand cancel. I get that all the time in Brighton. I have to take it to the clerk to have him/her cancel the stamps, as if I just drop it in the box it will get #1, a spray-on inkjet cancel in Toronto. Sometimes with the hand cancel, the spray-on is missed, sometimes not. #3 is a FIM (Facing Identification Mark) code, probably similar to the USA, that link tells the story about them.

Thank you renden and brightonpete for your enlightening information. However, I still don't get the FIM. Does every lettermail that passes through the processing equipment get a FIM? The lack of FIM would mean that the mail was hand processed or something like that?

Thanks René (renden) for foisting that onto me!
I have no idea! You are probably right in guessing it was processed by hand. But you'd think they would all get it, with one code saying this items needs to be handled by hand. Perhaps it is just too big for the FIM code to be applied.
Next time I get a letter with it, I'll ask at the post office here in town. But then... I don't get that many. Probably because I live in a small town? I just do not know.

Adding to comments by Peter and René,
As I understand how our Canadian system works; I could be incorrect.
1. This mark is applied as it is processed in a sorting centre. In this case, the date is shown along with the time of day. Also included is the postal code of the processing plant. Date 1 April 2014 00:15 K1H 0C1 This would be at the main sorting facility in Ottawa. I know by the K1H and the sending town of Merrickville is about 60 km away from Ottawa.
2 is a hand stamp for sure. It includes date, postal code but not time of day. The 312908 number in centre the the ID number for that post office.
3 I had always thought this was applied to aid in the mechanical sorting process and is read by optical readers. I have seen few printed on back. Most often I have seen this mark on post cards.
Just my observation.

Thank you all for your replies!
About the (3) FIM, I think I will write to Canada Post to be sure. Postal clerks working the post office don't necessarily know how the mails are processed.
