I have always heard (read) that stamps from countries in the above were filled with forgeries, and thus I always shied away from them. Am I correct in this? By default, I've accumulated many nice looking stamps from these regions over the years and have started to wonder if there might be some value hidden in them.
Thoughts?

I have a great number of stamps from these countries, but I've never developed much interest in pursuing them. Other than a Brazil Zeppelin stamp I have, I don't have much desire to collect them for reasons I can't explain. So there they sit.

If the stamp is relatively cheaply acquired ,forgery stamps can be quite collectable from any country and useful for identification purposes ,any I come across I keep in my stockbooks and quietly take pride in the fact I could identify it as a forgery. A really expensive stamp is a totally different matter.

I have been specifically collecting South and Central American stamps for quite a while now. Lately I have been focusing on the classic, pre-1940 stamps of South America but will eventually move on to Central America at some later date. The classic designs are in many cases quite attractive and there are areas that one can specialize in if you are inclined to go down that rabbit hole. As biglavalamp mentioned too, acquiring the stamps of various South American countries can be quite easy and inexpensive. I don't collect with the idea of enhancing the value of my collection though, by trying to acquire expensive stamps, I collect because I just like the idea of inexpensive attractive stamps and I like filling my album pages. I go down a rabbit hole or two and try to find minor varieties of specific sets too. I am also not opposed to collecting modern era stamps of any of the countries of South and Central America, again for the same reasons stated above. I can't speak to whether these countries have more or less forgeries and counterfeits than other countries. I know from collecting Asian stamps that forgeries for that area are pretty extensive as well but it has never stopped my from collecting them. Also, as biglavalamp says, collecting forgeries can be just as interesting as collecting the real thing.
