As I catalogue my stamps I place them in categories within my software so that I can find them easily across countries when looking for my topical stuff.
I invented a category years ago I call "Irony" - it's where I put stamps that I consider to be "ironical" in any way. For example, one of my physically *smallest* stamps (from the UAE somewhere back in the 70s IIRC) is of an elephant, the world's *largest* land mammal.
I also include stamps like a communist country well known for repressing its citizens' freedoms, issuing a stamp commemorating George Washington because he was a great freedom fighter. Riiiiiiiiiiihgt.
Anyone else have a unique category of stamps they like to collect? I remember reading one time about a collector who collected stamps along the lines of "Cows that only face to the left", LOL!

Rubber Duck Stamps I guess falls into this group? Its such a small topic I end up getting "close to a rubber duck" and calling it back of the book.

The most peculiar of my thematic collections is Greenland stamps in the 30mm x 23.5mm format (both landscape and portrait orientations). For some reason I feel these are the perfect size for stamps. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the picture part of the stamp is then very close to the golden ratio.

In the area of narrow-focus topicals, I do collect stamps-on-stamps or Cinderellas with images of Cape of Good Hope Triangles.
I will add an image later, as I can't seem to find one at the moment!

I have recently started a fun collection of stamps and covers postmarked on the day of my birth, August 6, BEGINNING WITH MY BIRTH YEAR 1946. Nothing earlier than 1946.

I believe topical collecting has for more potential than traditional collector given the topics can cross other hobbies (crafting, coins, etc). I go to a craft store (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, old AC Moore etc.) and see all the esoteric items that are available.
I am not super serious but my favorites are stamps on stamps and Christmas. I typically do not collect after 1980 but if I see certain issues I may get them.

Wow this thread has me wondering what is Unusual when it comes to stamps. At one time Topical or Thematic was Unusual even looked down on. If there is a study group is it unusual? If there is a topical check list for it is it unusual? This is such a great topic! Thank you for starting. JeffS gave me an idea I never even though of looking at.

Hi seegod1 I Collect Colombia as my wife is from Tunja, Boyaca, Colombia (and Bogota). Anything pertaining to the department of Boyaca gets my attention. Also my wife's childhood home in Tunja is on a stamp: I assume that fits into what you call "Irony" catalog. Jerry B

A few years ago I got looking at tobacco and anti-smoking on stamps and entered a Thematic (Topical) class at a show. Got fewer marks than I thought I should but had it gently explained that a lot of my items, letters and ephemera did not fit the rules for the Thematic class. However there was a new exhibition class at National and international level variously called “Social” or “Open” where anything goes , from coins medals , postcards and even beer mats .
Just the freedom I needed to get me knocking at a gold medal standard!

JeffS , I likes me beer, and I enjoys pink grapefruit ……..BUT the mixture sounds disgusting …. I note it is from the “Silly Brewery” that says enough. … as bad as cucumber in my gin……or jello with a steak …. Or pineapple on a pizza…….. it’s is just so wrong a combo.

Hey Philatelia! "Schnauzers on stamps! My fur babies insisted, eh? Here’s hubby with Zener" What an *adorable* mutt! And the dog's cute too! Actually, my friend has a Schnauzer she found lost on a road *in the middle of nowhere in Northern Ontario* five years ago... couldn't find the owners, kept him, called him "Habeas Doggus" or something to that effect (She's a Crown Attorney), Habeas for short, and has been posting their adventures ever since. He's completely cute and very charming so I could see why you'd collect them!

Hello stamp friends. I hope everyone is having a pleasant weekend. This has been a really interesting thread! In my general topic of stamps about the law are two sub-topics that are interesting to me, but a little off the beaten track. The first is stamps and other philatelic material concerning the global battle against corruption. There is actually quite a bit of material out there on this topic. I am thinking of writing an article on it. Here is a cover from Tunisia in 2018 commemorating World Anti-Corruption Day. The second is a little sad. I am interested in stamps on the topic of injustice. Bad laws, unjust trials, the falsely accused, and, sadly, those people who have been executed or assassinated for upholding the law as they saw it. One such person is Italian Carabinieri General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa. He was assassinated by the Mafia in Palermo in 1982. His story is especially tragic. This is another possible article, but I need to do some additional research.

I practiced law for about ten minutes in the early nineties (believe me, it wasn't much longer! ) and can see why this would be a topic of interest! Speaking of anti-corruption, have you heard of International Justice Mission link? They work to combat trafficking, slavery and corruption around the world. I remember hearing their founder speak at a conference once, and what he talked about as one of their chief tactics is to keep going up the ladder in government justice systems until they find That One Uncorruptible Person who will work with them to help change things from within. A great tactic, yes?

I have a collection of triangle stamps. I also think the 2 plastic stamps from the US are awesome. 2 more stamps I want that are unusual would be the chocolate stamp and the cd stamp(s). There are other unusual stamps out there that if I started a collection of this sort I would have to have.
