Hi everyone I have my grandfathers stamp collection which has some really interesting stamps.some from countries that haven't existed for a while! From what I can tell most are pre world war II. Grandad served in the British army as an officer and was stationed in India and thus had a lot of stamps from that period. I don't have the faintest idea about stamps but luckily grandad had Alphabetically listed the countries and added stamps to the relative pages. He even Dated his American collection and has some pre 1900's.
I enjoy looking at the collection but don't wish to damage it. I'd like to make some pictures, can anyone explain how to get these aging stamps from their album and scanning them and returning them without damaging them? I have always been more about force then finesse and am scared I am going to ruin Grandads hard work. Thanks Jack

Hi Jack
Well done on getting this far.
I would suggest that you just take a few good quality pictures with your camera to start with (leave the stamps on their pages for now) then post them here. Say 3-4 pictures per post.
People here will advise you on what they see. Don't be put off if the stamps are not rare, very few are! The main thing is that they are not damaged and are visually appealing to look at. Some may be worth something but 98% (arbitrary figure used here) will not be worth too much at all.
Some will be worth hanging onto, damaged cheap ones not so much.
It would be nice to see what your grandad has there. We collectors always enjoy seeing 'fresh' material :-)
Good luck
Dave

Hello Jack, A lot of people who are non collectors believe that because a stamp is old it is valuable, in the majority of cases this is not true, as a lot of stamps that are well over 100 years old are only worth a few pence.
On the other hand some of the more modern day stamps with printing or paper imperfections/variations can command high prices, so there is no set rule.
Another point to take into consideration is quality, a damaged stamp (torn, creased, heavily cancelled, missing perforations, sellotaped etc.) also has a bearing on a stamps value and can consequently make the stamp in question virtually worthless. A further factor is when people see a catalogue price and think that is what a stamp is worth, but in many cases their true value can be as little as 10% or even less in some cases.
So please bear this in mind. Quote : He who expects nothing is never disappointed. Paperchase

Don't remove any of them. You can scan a page or take photos right with them in place. Crop them down in even the most basic software/app
Enjoy your grandads work just the way he had it till you decide to expand or carry on his work or decide to build your own started on his. Then you may want to move stamps to do it your way and how you will mount your stamps (brand color ect)

Hi everyone I have been searching through Grandads stuff and find more treasure! Many more stamps and hundreds of coins from the 18th and 19th centuy. I'm in a bit of awe on what to do with it all to be honest, is there a well regarded stamp expert in Essex or London I could take these too and get an evaluation?

There's an Auction house called Warwick and Warwick, check their site as they used to ,pre covid have dates around the UK where they would pitch up so people could get collections valued. Their website is www.warwickandwarwick.com. There is also Stanley Gibbons based in London 399 Strand, London, WC2R 0NH ยท (020) 7836 8444, I would call them first. All the best

hi - soon you might have more advice than stamps;-) - but, just thought it worth stating the obvious - don't sell based on a single valuation - if possible get at least two or three. Best of luck.
