Here’s a topic all of us have thought about at one time or another. At some point in order to fill the empty spaces in our collections we need to make a wishlist, right? But what information do YOU consider essential for your wishlist? Is a single catalog number sufficient? Do you feel you need to include catalog values to help you decide if a purchase is priced right? Do you use multiple catalogs? Do you use a data base program or just write up lists by hand or use a word processor? I currently use Colnect to create my wishlist because it allows me to easily access a ton of information about any stamp I am missing. The only data missing is catalog value, but many stamps are also for sale there so I can often get an idea of approximate value. And on Colnect I automatically have a thumbnail picture. While I only collect about 20 major areas, my wishlist has 17,500 items. That’s because I include lots of sub varieties and I have a dual collection - I try to find a mint AND a postally used copy. Plus all the new issues OMG! Another nice thing about online lists - as I have my phone, I can access my full wishlist anywhere. Link to my wishlistIn years long passed I had to write up lists by hand and would only redo the list once it had enough scratched out numbers. Ugh! Word processors came along in the late 80s and early 90s and were a huge help. And now we have powerful online data bases like Colnect available. Cool beans, eh? My barebones wishlist would be a Scott number and mint or used condition. Let’s hear what you believe to be the best way to make a wishlist.

I go by the choice of Countries (classics) that I have accumulated and try not to start another Country without merit
Presently, Denmark and Italy are my Countries to fill spaces
I have just bought a 1915 Danemark on Delcampe - will show after it is paid - Delcampe is the worst site for my taste but I manage to find better prices so I have to be patient, awaiting the final bill (shipping is not always evident)
Will be back

I have to get ANOTHER email account I guess, but I'm not as I don't want another one! My current one seems to be black-listed by Colnect. They've never sent me email, but somehow they say I have sent their email to the SPAM folder. Huh?
Oh well...

Good question, Terri. To add to your Wishlist format, I would add Year of Issue and format (single, sheet, block, strip, etc...) AS I continue to work on use of my non-Scott catalogs, I would add the other pertinent catalog information (most specifically, Zumstein for Swiss/Liech)
I have my inventory in an Excel workbook, so I can save to MS OneDrive and bring my tablet to a show. So I have the inventory right there.
What I need to do better is the purchases I have made and the material from various purchases and inventory those to reduce re-buying the same item.

I use Liberty Street's StampManage and it has a wishlist (want List) feature. However, given the breadth of my collecting interests, what I have is less than what I want. I do not buy many individual stamps except from Stamporama.
I would not keep my entire collection information in Colnect or other online tool since I want the data to reside on my computer and accessible anytime (without Internet). If Colnect disappeared, I want to still have the information.

The one thing I never have on my want lists are catalog numbers. Country and year is the only constant. Other then that what ever topical list I have them on fills in a lot of the info I need. A more detailed subject note will also be on many.
1930 Spain Nude will always find the Age of Goya set on any search or sales site. On a site like Colnect you can even just click them in reverse order and find the stamps.
Catalog numbers has always been a sore subject for me. I think the fact us collectors and all the groups between associations and what was clubs and now forums have not fixed that has hurt the hobby.
I had hopes when I first saw the WAPD number system but it fell short and was never reverse compatible and 3 of the partners were the leading international groups in collecting.
Sorry for the rant

Oh well... I am sure that could be corrected with the help of members off Colnect, Pete

I do mine the old fashion way pen and paper. Listed by Scott number and what I need single, block ect... Although I do have my USA collection on Colnet I don't use the want list there but I may try it out.

I only have a U.S. want list -- it is a Word document printed on a single page, front to back. I only track the Scott number as I am only looking for either singles or coil pairs, used or unused. Below is a snippet of that list (the grayed out numbers are those whose CV is currently outside of my means). I don't have a worldwide want list, per se, but rely on my excel inventory to identify gaps in my collection. Each country has its own page in the spreadsheet.

What works for me is to keep a Word document, currently 8 pages. I print it out whenever I head to a stamp bourse.
Page 1 includes a list of collecting areas and my contact information intended for stamp dealers.
Page 2 is a list of postmarks and kinds of covers I am looking for.
The rest is organized by countries in a way that is a compromise between the classifications of dealers and the areas I collect. There are several pages of French colonies, one for German area, one for the rest of Europe, and one for the rest of the world including such obscure places as North Borneo, the United States, and Ecuador.
On the first page, I put a key. I use different colors of ink or fonts to indicate types of items:
KEY Bold=priority Red=high priority Bold Italic=better items sought Plain Italic= probably too expensive Blue= less than $1 Green=variety sought Orange=mint to replace used *ordered online @active bid ! check catalog: easily mistaken or often forged # year of issue X=except (listing those I already have) us=used un=unused ng=unused, no gum sur=surcharge ov=overprint other than surcharge upg = upgrade for a placeholder c=chalk, nc=nonchalk g= groupe type (navigation and commerce) n=neziere (artist) r=rock art (topic)

Let me take a different aproach Time ago i was speaking with a polish friend and we got speaking about a "life certificate" (certificato di esistenza in vita) that you can request in Italy... My friend was astonished... in Poland we don't have such a certificate... We have death certificates. If you're not dead, you're alive...
I don't have a wishlist... I have a list of the stamps that i have... What i don't have, i miss...

You need an inventory (on paper or in your computer) of what you have and do not have - seems easy but a lot of people do not have either René
