A first day card for this commemorative issued August 9, 1948. I have a little collection of this issue as it was issued the day my wife was born.

Cover with postal stationery cutout (illegal in the USA) attempted use for postage, caught and returned for proper postage. Chain letter enclosure.

A cover with a bit of character:
Printed matter to Germany. German repaired mail seals. Looks like bulky contents were too much for the mailing envelope.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

CROSBY PHOTO CACHETS
In the area of First Day Covers and cachets, one maker stands out a favorite, the cachets of Walter Crosby. His niche was using a combination of thermography for the printing plus the addition of a miniature photograph of the subject.
The bottom cover is postmarked on August 10 1948, the day after the official first day of issue, but the first day of sale across the nation. In the area of serious FDC collecting of a particular issue, second day covers are as popular, if not more so, than first days. Note the postmark of the USS Shenandoah, a US Navy Destroyer Tender ship.
Collecting Crosby photo cachet covers is also a collectible area of its own.

A "Second Day Cover" from Washington DC.
For the benefit of those unfamiliar with US stamp issuing, at one time a specific city (sometimes cities) was designated as the first day city(s) and the stamp was not sold at other post offices until the next day.
Note the addressee.
This DC cancel is typical of that location. Better still are covers posted from locations other than DC. Also desirable are covers prepared by collectors and driven to other cities and posted on the official first day.
I have a feeling I could have written this better

My knowledge of famous people within our hobby is non existent so of course I had to Google the addressee. At first I said wow. Then I realized that Alfred F. Lichtenstein (philatelist) was already passed away by 1948 having died on February 24, 1947. The middle initial is the giveaway.

Frederick Maryland was the official first day city for this stamp. Two FIRST DAY OF ISSUE postmarks were available. A machine cancel which processed the majority of first day covers and a larger hand cancel intended for covers bearing blocks. Some collectors strive for the hand cancel on the single stamp as well.

Received today, a most unusual cachet, silkscreen printed in 10 different colors of ink by a gent named Ira Bennett. According to the price guide in my older FDC catalog, this is quite a bit better than a lot of them.
10 colors of ink. That's a labor of love of cachet printing for sure.

Cachets in red & Blue, also brown & blue, produced by a Wakefield Co., sometimes referred to as "WCO". No explanation given for the red vs brown. The cachet caption repeats the story of Key being held prisoner on the English flagship SURPRISE.
Key and a companion were actually on their own "Truce Ship" which was tethered to a British ship. Key was likely some six to eight miles from America’s Fort McHenry, viewed the bombardment through binoculars, and wrote the anthem the following morning after finding that the defense of Fort McHenry had held.

Just arrived today:
A long Pent Arts cachet with added green and yellow envelope border intended to indicate special delivery, along the same concept as red and blue borders for airmail. A receiving postmark at Kansas City indicates that special delivery service was indeed given.
The black handstamp on back - PERMANENT REGISTRATION, COLLECTOR'S SURPLUS, BOX 5900, KANSAS CITY, MO. - is obviously private, not postal. It further indicates that this cover is from SERIES ES1, SET NO. 2232, and COVER NO. 1 of the series/set.
Pent Arts covers get their name as their long FDCs typically bore 5 stamps, thus the word "Pent" in the name. I don't know their relationship with Collector's Surplus.

Nice cover JeffS! Is the “long” FDC similar in size to a modern #10 envelope, or longer?

It is possible that Pent Arts takes its name from producing 5 cachets for each (most) issues such as this Iwo Jima commemorative:

I've been working on a small collection of this stamp with an overall direction showing the story of Key and the bombardment of Fort McHenry. More pages to follow:
