Hi everyone - I 'm new to collecting and was looking to get some old copies of Stanley Gibbons catalogues and I noticed they do online versions for a slightly cheaper price. Has anybody used the online versions before? Just wanted to see how the printed copy and digital version compares. Thanks!!

Hi, Vanessa ( rainbowhugz): Thanks for your post. I don’t use the SG online version, so I can’t comment on that. I do, however, use the Scott online version, so I will just mention that briefly. It is basically a reconstruction of the paper version accessed through the Scott website. The info is exactly the same, just displayed in your browser. There is an index you can activate to go right to the country you want, and it is possible to increase and decrease the page size within a designated range. Hope this helps a little. -Chris

Good morning rainbowhugz, I use Stanley Gibbons MyCollection and I like it. It lacks some of the features of the printed Stamps of The World (SOTW) Series, it is easy to use and helpful in keeping track of what you have. I received an email from them and they will be updating the data set used for the product to match their 2022 SOTW Catalogues.

I have the SG Canada catalogue. Works fine for me. However with the increasingly fraught financial situation SG has found itself due to the sheer financial mismanagement of the Company by outside investors who own the brand (including now their magenta albatross hanging around SGs neck), I made sure to get a hard copy of SG Canada for my library, and for now at least will buy new SG regional catalogues only in hardcopy. I just do not feel secure in SGs future to trust electronic versions will remain accessible over the next 2-5 years.

There is also Colnect as an online option that includes SG numbers but obviously not an SG product.

Thanks angore - I have also joined Colnect. It's a good reference for me to search for stamps quickly without flipping through a book. I managed to find an older copy of SG with a local seller (in Hong Kong) but waiting for them to respond as they were charging me international postage rates for a local post item so the shipping is 6x the amount of the old SG copy! I'm even hoping they don't mind meeting up so I don't have to pay postage, but let's see...

UPDATE: I finally managed to get my hands on a hard copy of Stanley Gibbons Hong Kong 5th edition on ebay for a very reasonable price (including shipping). I gave up on the local seller (above post) as he didn't reply to me at all, so I complained to Hipstamp about it. Still going to try and look for a Yang's but their latest edition was published in 2018 and not far off the 5th edition SG. But they still have a shop and an auction platform (run separately), so I'm hoping to go and visit soon. Funnily enough, our local libraries have got copies of Yang's but they are housed in the Reference Library, which means you can't check it out. You can only look at the books at the library (or photocopy the pages that you need). Not too helpful unless I want to bring all my stamps with me to the library...

You could scan your stamps and view on your phone or even post to the TSF host and view online that way.

Funny - I recently inquired to SG about their online catalogues - never heard back. I suppose I'll just buy the hard copy catalogues I want - Concise and Channel Islands, and leave it at that.
I also asked about their app, which is terrible IYAM. But again, crickets...

I have one of the SG online (digital) catalogues -- India 2018 5th edition (latest I believe). I use it but I don't love it. And I would be annoyed if SG went out of business and I lost access to it.
I have older hard copy versions but they also have their issues (dated pricing, changing variety numbers -- IFS in particular, heavy and awkward)
Things I like about the SG online catalogue:
1) latest valuations (really about 4 years old now though) 2) OK but not great resolution of images 3) leaves me logged in for long periods of time -- so I don't have to login every time I want to use it
Things I don't like about it:
1) no easy way to save off or print a page at maximum resolution 2) navigation to individual sections works OK but 3) you then have to zoom in to read a page and 4) you have to zoom out to move to another page
Example pages below:
Hot links in index to jump to desired section e.g., for IFS states there is a hot link for each state, this is the first page of the main India section:
Zoomed in to maximum resolution -- OK but not great

Thanks for that banknoteguy . I'll stick with my own copies in print instead! That online catalogue doesn't look all that great!

Thanks for this banknoteguy. I'll stick to their printed copies as well. My next task is to look for a Canada catalogue...

Thanks for this banknoteguy. I'll stick to their printed copies as well. My next task is to look for a Canada catalogue... Best is Uniteade, it goes deep into variants that Gibbons does not cover, like fluorescent paper varieties.

Thanks for the recommendation djcmh - I've been looking into that as well but I'll do some more research on it. Maybe I can convince my cousin to pop it in her suitcase the next time she comes back to Hong Kong for holidays.
