I see there was a singleton of Churchill earlier in this thread. Going through some miscellaneous stamps this morning realized I had some that perhaps hadn't been aired here before, so for those who have an interest in the great man, here they are:

Rifling through another recently acquired pre-owned second-half C20 album, I've pulled out a few more of Sir Winston Churchill - pix attached. Not that I would have known, but it seems he was appointed to the ministerial post of First Lord of the Admiralty late in 1911, making him the civilian head of the British Royal Navy, and whilst I'm not up on stamps from Yemen, he appears here on this 6 BOGSHAHS issue - 'Famous Men of History' in what looks to be Admiral of the Fleet uniform. I offer you all this waffle with slight misgivings, but wonder whether we should consider Churchill's position as First Lord of the Admiralty - in 1911 - as taking precedence over the well known George V 'Admirals' - (Canada 1912) - (Rhodesia 1913) and (New Zealand 1926) - thus making Churchill the first of the 'Admirals'? Answers on a post card please to TSF. ;-);-)

paul1 . Churchill in that Yemen portrait is much older than the young politician Churchill was as Minister for the Navy in 1911. A civilian not a Naval rank so no Admiral’s uniform. In later life he held the ceremonial and honorary title of Warden of the Cinque ports ( Sandwich, Dover, Romney , Hythe and Hastings) on the English Channel coast. I think that period around 1941-65 is what is represented on the Yemen stamp. Only then did Churchill become an ( Honorary) Admiral. The image is from a 1956 portrait of him in uniform.Other Wardens at different times have been Sir Robert Menzies PM of Australia, and HM the Queen Mother.

thanks vikingeck (Alex), am sure you're correct - I wasn't being too serious as you may have gathered. On reflection, although George V is described as Admiral, do we know if his title was real or only ministerial?

George V had at least served in the Navy as a young man so it was inevitable that he would become an Admiral when he became King. Incidentally he was never intended to be king . As the second son, he was propelled into the succession when his older brother Prince Albert Victor died of influenza and pneumonia. He also had to marry his late brother’s fiancée Mary of Teck . Grand Mama Victoria organised these things !
He was the Spare who became heir, like his son George Vi ( another Albert) who became king by default with the abdication of his brother Edward VIii.
