Hi all,
In all my years collecting and soaking stamps I have never seen an idiot box like this one. I actually like it. Anyone else have or seen some not so run of the mill idiot boxes?

Lol! Thanks for the laugh! Reminds me of some of the idiot warnings on stuff nowadays.

I have these markings on return envelopes. Most had "place stamp here" or similar words and some included the first class rate.

Yes , not at all uncommon both on postcards and on printed stationery envelopes.
In the early days different countries had different rules for stamps . It was not uncommon for European countries to place the stamp lower left. India and many Asian countries stamped the back flap of an envelope as a seal , even occasionally today you will find this .
I guess it was a good idea to have instructions for less savvy users, after all almost 50% of the population is of below average intelligence.

That's similar to the "Remove child before washing" tag someone showed in Facebook one time... sigh.

I was sure I could find a number of similar " boxes" but I suspect most of my used postcards already have the imprint hidden by a stamp . However here are two, one is from WW1 1914-18 and the other from recent Canada around the Millennium

Here are some 1860-1900 covers which perhaps explain why such a box was considered necessary and sometimes with an instruction ........... so maybe not so strange and not so daft after all
