I don't send many parcels but today I sent one. As I have lots of spare stamps I checked the Royal Mail website and found it fitted the small parcel, < 500grams catagory, so put on the stated £3.95 of stamps, the 1st class price. On visiting my local Post Office I was told that the cost was £4.45. I asked them to re-check but they insisted it was right. I wasn't going to argue over 50p so gave them the extra money.
On returning home I checked the internet again and found that if you buy and print your own labels for a small parcel then there is a varying range of prices from 100gms to 2 kgs with 500 gms being £3.95. However at the Post Office the only price available was for a parcel up to 2kgs at £4.45.
This seems a big disadvantage for the typical customer that goes to their Post Office to send their small parcels.
The young lady at the Post Office did however comment on the nice stamps I had ahdhered to the parcel, I guess she had only ever seen Machins before!!

I have never tried using the buy and print your own labels option……if you are buying online do you get a discount like a meter mark.? Are you allowed to add stamps instead? I confess I don’t know how it works , cos like you, I always bung on a pile of my spare stamps. If you using a current price list michael . According to the current price list since 4 April there is only one Price for a small parcel up to 2 kg which is indeed £4.45. 1st class , 3.35 2nd class. There is no parcel rate shown >500g.and no mention of a £3.95 rate

Hi Alex, I just searched for small parcel cost and got to their click and drop section. You can select the weight and then you get this:
I've just tried different weights up to 2kgms and you get the same price!
Maybe it's an internet special option or maybe they are trying to get everything to buy online now.

A step towards closing more post offices 🤔 perhaps.
an online discount not available at the service counter. Certainly metered mail has always been cheaper .
